Hand Guard removal question when swapping handlebars
 
Hi,

I had the Yamaha OEM (Acerbis) hand guards fitted by Yamaha which is all fine and dandy but I didn't see what they did to put them on. I now have some Renthals and I want to shift the hand guards over. The bar end insert thingies are wedged inside the stock Yamaha bars and before I apply de rigeur brute force and ignorance I thought I'd ask.

I'm going to guess that it's the same set up as http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/fo...d.php?t=233459 and so the reason they're wedged in is that the tapered "nut" (5) has been pulled back out of the handlebars by repeated turns of the bolt thus splaying the thingy (4) and locking the whole setup into the inside of the bars.

So, to undo it, should I screw the bolt back in then tap it ever so gracefully with a hammer to push the taper beyond the splayable thingy then wiggle everything until Bob's yer uncle?

Even then that thread suggests I might need to get creative to increase the diameter of the insert to get it to grip non-steel bars. That's a problem for when they're out!

are you expecting everything inside the bar to just sort of slip out at this point because the bolt isn't inside holding it tight?

The bolt screws into the central silver threaded bit (duh) then there's the black/tan bit surrounding it with some shiny black cracked stuff in the 3-4 o'clock position which I guess is some left over goo. Then it looks like there's two outer silver sheaths. One is definitely the bar (it's on the outside -- I'm good at this!) but the other could either be the outside of the whole bar insert thingy or a second skin of the bar.

Should I be screwing the bolt most of the way back in then using it to give me some purchase in simply pulling the whole lot out?

In the meanwhile I've given it a good blast with WD40.

I don't want to say for certain as it's been a while since I took mine apart and I can't remember all the steps, but it might be a case of excess (super sonic) glue used by Yamaha when building the bike, which is preventing it from easing out.

So I've wiggled a great deal to no avail and phoned up the garage who put them in who replied promptly that a) they won't come out and b) they'd be all wrong for my Renthals. Bah, tossers!

So I found some geezers on the net who sell just the Acerbis bar end inner expander bits which almost as soon as I'd ordered them I thought was a complete fsck-up because I'd not thought about the inside diameter of the bars
nor bits of rubber. In fact I'd not really thought about it much at all, I was just impressed that I'd found someone who flogged the bits for �7 a shot.

As it turns out, they're quite unlike the Yamaha fitted ones in the above shot as you can see http://i676.photobucket.com/albums/v...p/DSC_2067.jpg.

The main splayable/knurled bit doesn't have a screw thread -- only the tapered bit does which you will be pulling back out of the bar when you tighten, thus splaying the thingy. What's more the knurled bit fits exactly inside the Renthals. In fact, with the taper sqidged on the end it wouldn't go in at all. That's what I call a tight squeeze. Not too much call for a rubber sleeve. It's a completely different diameter thread screw too.

So, for �14 it's looking good.

Doesn't matter, all sorted from KTM dealer.

Out of interest, the KTM bar end/handguard inserts slide straight into our bars, tehy spread when you put a bolt in them.

Mine cost me �2 from my local KTM dealer and are brilliant.
