how you attach the items to the lid of the panniers?

Touratech supply a small loop bracket for a couple of quid. You have to think about where you mount them because of the plastic ridges inside the pannier. It does work very well though. I have an oil can and a small bag, both have Oxford Blanket patches stuck to the back to help grip the lid of the pannier.

I though about this, then discounted it. If you fall then one of the panniers has enough 'twist' in it to absorb the impact inwards (towards the wheel) but I think an outward impact (such as if the panniers were connected together by a rear support bar, if you fell to the left the left pannier would fall inward, pushing the right one outward) would damage the top mounting and possibly even the lower rubber one. If you wanted to go down this route you would need to run a loop from the rear hanger out behind the number plate and duplicate for the other side, you would also need to give it some support from the top - if you'r going that far then MM, TT or the likes would be a better bet, and a stronger solution.
I put well over 8000 miles on these, fully loaded - over loaded infact according to the Yamaha blurb. Yesterday I recieved a new pair of panniers from Yamaha as one of them has developed a stress fracture in the top mounting. I'm not complaining, given the severe abuse (anyone how's traversed Romania will tell you) these boxes got in such a short time, I was actually suprised they are as tough as they are. My oppinion is , if it's enough to cause a fracture, then I'd rather it was on the pannier mount than the bike frame.......
