Corrision to engine casings
Hi Everyone,
I have approached Yamaha UK (Customer Services) to complain about corrision to outter and inner engine casings on my FEB 07 XTR (9k miles - used daily). This is really quiet extensive, and not just where you might expect it (underneath and hidden away spots) but on upper casings as well. They have advised me to visit the Dealer I bought it from new, who have taken pictures and are sending these back to Yamaha Customer Services. As yet I don't know what the outcome will be - the bike is still under warrenty - so I might get new engine casings. Has anywone else suffered from corrision like this? Could it have been a "batch" production problem, in which case there are likely to be a few more bikes out-there that might be affected. Regards, Tomo7 |
Took mine to a local yamaha dealer and he told me that they would NOT replace them as it was wear and tear mine had only done 7,000 miles ,even though Yamaha uk had said ok the dealer would have been out of pocket on the labour
w**k**s thats all i can say JT MORGAN MOTORCYCLES SWANSEA |
That does sound like a crap deal. Did you get back in touch with Yamaha and tell them what the dealer had decided? I would have thought it was not in Yamaha's interest to get bad PR by treating you this way. Failing that, you could take a case with the Small Claims Court: Goods should be fit for purpose.

Since i put the claim in i had an accident on the bike so it's pointless now and good luck with your claim

FS365 or WD40 or simular. Tends to be a Yam trait if you dont keep on top of it:bricks:
|
Bike was washed thouroughly after every ride and coated in oily rag and wd40 but you cant top it as the corrosion starts beneath the paint and Yamaha know this yet they will only replace outer most cases
|
Sorry to hear you damaged the bike - while in the process of claiming about the corrision. I also kept my bike clean etc. Yamaha are not some tiny operation - they produce marine machines as well and I am sure they are on top of chemically treating their engine metal - so I don't buy the "resignation that this problem is beyond sorting" that might be being perpetuated by dealers (to put anyone off complaining about the problem). I had a look around the other bikes at my dealers and none of them showed the extent of corrision that mine has! This is probably something to do with the manufacturing batch - your bike might have been one of the same batch!

Sorry but cant see it as a batch as my friend(worked in a local dealer) told me that they had done a few engine cases since 04(dealer wont mention that) and mine is an 06 so think there is something wrong but as you said dealers will try eveything to put people off
|
Yep jas your very true. Ive an 06 and its got some bad corrosion of the engine casings but i was too late on the warrenty (dealer told me wrong date than was in book, arrgghh) so never got mine changed. But even so i wouldnt think they would have changed them as the salesman tried to say that the XT660 just a big single so will feel very surgy. Load of balls as i read all the info i needed on this forum.

engine casings
Hello everybody, looks like i'm joining the queue with the dodgy paint job on the engine.
I've got an 08 XTR and just after washing it yesterday some of the paint has started to come off, looks like the ally underneath the paint has started to corrode and is attacking the paint!. I've only done 4000 miles, and once she has been out in the wet. It's never been off road. I'm going to leave it another month and then it's time to take it back. Both engine casings and covers have started to bubble. I thought i'd try something different from a Honda, looks like it's going to be an expensive lesson.I had the same CBR for 7 years and not even a bit of corrosion on it. This is going to be my first and LAST Yamaha.Never again. |
Having read the postings on this subject on this excellent site, and having bought a 55 plate xtx with some engine casing corrosion, i took it along to my local dealer in Faversham and informed the man that it was a known problem and if he got any grief from Yamaha i would be on the phone to them pronto. I left it with him whilst working abroad for two weeks and hey presto on my return i was presented with my bike along with both engine covers replaced and a bill for two litres of oil, @ 9.00. Which just goes to prove it's down to the quality of the dealer you go to. Good luck

I've just put my XTR away for a few weeks as of (15 Dec) the road salt is really corroding it even with regular washing. I knew this would be the case though as just about every bike I have ever owned needed a lot of work to get it looking ok again after the winter. Actually thats not true, my 2000 VFR was very good at holding back the corrosive side of an english winter.
I just accept that bikes aren't made to last, and as I don't usually buy brand new, the cosmetics don't matter to me as much as the fun. Having said that, all the corrosion that is staring on my XTR is from the outside and I have had no problem with paint bubbling off like you lot have. Cheers Hoov |
This is probaly a bit of a silly question but other than looking bad cosmeticaly what are the main functional problem with corrosion on a bike?
Basicaly if I'm doing 25k miles a year on a bike I'd expect the engine to be shot before I get any serious corrosion problems woludn't I (i'd hope for 100-150k miles?) |

It is just wrong that other Bikes dont have this problem and Yamaha should be able to address it in a Bike that is meant for International distribution it should be able to handle all Climates, it is not that our Raod conditions are a new thing, road salt has been used for years. |
Ive just got the lastest RIDE mag and there is an article in it about quality of parts and why corrosion on some bikes is higher than others.
Part of the test was to measure the depth of paint on engine casings and as you guessed yamaha was down there with the others like suzuki, aprillia, etc where as honda, triumph and others where at the top. (saying this they only tested the usual crotch rockets and sporty bikes, not your average joe bloggs bike) |
The outer cases on mine look newish, the main crankcases are starting to bubble up where the outer cases join them. Maybe the previous owner had the outer cases replaced?
Anyone tried the Scottoiler spray ? You spray it on when the bike is wet and it is supposed to leave a protective film over the bike that neutralises salt. I will be using my bike everyday for work so the first thing I did when I got the bike home was give it a quick wash then covered the engine, frame and whels in the stuff. I'll let you know how it works. |
I use the scottoiler stuff and WD40. As im sure you have read the Scottoiler stuff leaves a film that is better than WD40 but its the same old game you have to wash the bike every now and then to get the worst of the road crud off and give it a good bathing in the stuff.
Does the job but is a bit on the steep side.:102: (im a skin flint) |
Well im not happy ive just found paint coming off the engine case on my bike so Webbs are getting a visit tomorrow!! I keep my bike clean its my pride and joy washed before its put away and I use the Scottoil stuff on it!!
