Nice pic Mudcrawler. QUestion, does your front fender in any way block the airflow to the radiator?

Took the bike out for its first proper run on Saturday.
Stick a tenner in the tank and head south, it's where the sun is, planning to take an easy byway over the hills to the Derwnet valley, but miss the turn and can't be bothered to get the map out. Still the view from the tarmac isn't bad. Make the first off road bit, I've not been on the trails for yonks. Taking the pic I'm thinking might have chose an easier one. Bounce down the trial trying to miss the bigger rocks and keep out the big ruts, death grip on the bars, I'm saying to myself just relax let the bike do the work, doesn't help. Have such a good day on Saturday, get me self out again on Sunday, once the Carlingberg has worn off. Stick nine quid in the tank, wouldn't take any more, and Head North West, it's where the sun is. I'm soon at the first trail. Tyres complain about the inch of mud at the start, but hey if it was easy.

Couldn't fault the bike, did about 100 mile each day, fill up in the morning, ride all day, sat at 70 on the big roads, just wafted you along the road no hassle, solid as a rock despite the wind, did the B roads fine and handled some easy trails, I like it. Just need to get bike fit again and remember that waterproof trousers aren't much use left on the kitchen table, cold plumbs on Satda. |

Our paths must have crossed at some point on Saturday, I headed off north up the A7 then peeled off towards Newcastleton, then over to Kielder (was gonna take the forest trail but it's closed!) then onward to the A68 and south peeling off into Bellingham, Wark, over the Military road towards Hexham and South to Hartside. Had a cuppa and a crack with Dazzerrtw, SteveD and Nick (on a BMUU) and we headed off down into the eastern lakes and over Kirkstone Pass, into Windermere for another cuppa and home..... The roads were a bit on the greasy side, and I nearly came a cropper on the road at the back of fellhouse Fell - I was late for the meet and going way too fast over a big dip in the road, which I left behind as the wheels began to have thoughts of become stewardesses.... Good day though, next week Moffat and the Scottish boys....... |

What a fantastic place to ride skunkmoto. You need to arrange a trail ride around that area so us tenere boys from the northwest could ride up and join in. Great pictures.

Thanks for the replies, I like seeing these posts, gives ya a bit of incentive, and this place definitely tipped the balance for me to get a Tenere, so a big thanks to Cap�n for the excellent site, and all those who have contributed, too many to list.
GULG was planning to get to Heartside to see a few faces, but had a late start, went throo Nethead/Alston/686 about 3-4ish, only saw one bike all day on the Saturday. PeteBog, could definatley do with some company, don�t really like doing the remote trails solo, if things go wrong you�re stuffed. Loads of trails round your way, amble-rothbury-wooler, haven�t ridden them all, but it�s one of the areas I want to explore on the Tenere. Thead in the ride out bit? To anyone else get along to your local TRF they should help you get out. |

Skunkmoto, do you have a name for those routes? I have seen similar photos years ago but the routes were Dere Street and Kings Road, both Roman Roads. There is another route up there somewhere that I believe doesn't have one single gat on it in 17 miles, do you know of this?

No names for the ones I did, Kings Road? don't know that one. Dere St I know, my lil sig pic is from up that way. Lots of claims in up here got shafted by the nerc bill :mad: which is bout as much I want to say on a public forum. The pics are of legal trails, btw.

Before I forget Yam6, on a more technical issue, how have you found the auxillary lights? Especially on the draw from the battery? Have you tried to have all gadgets turned on, plus heated grips (if you have it), and may be extra plug to heated vest?

I have to ask why do you need a map roller if you have a GPS, I mean I plan my trip on a pc then up-load routes and waypoints to the GPS����put the GPS on the bike���go riding and follow the route from the GPS. Or is the map roller just to make you �look the part�����..lol |

Fundamentally, a GPS needs to be programmed (and once done, means you tend to slavishly follow the route programmed in). This is fine for navigating a relatively simple road/trail route, but if you have multiple turns/junctions etc, takes a lot of time to program the exact route. It is also difficult (if not impossible) to mark hazards such as washouts/blind crests etc. on the screen. Using a paper road book allows you to put all your instructions on paper, edit them with a pen, and roll them forward or backward and to bypass any particular section completely if you wish. And perhaps most importantly, they are a hard copy - they can't run out of power or get an electrical hiccup, which is the primary reason International Rallye organsiations still use that format. Typically every day there is an adjustment to the route, and it is far easier to mark that on the paper roll, than re-program a GPS unit. Also, if you are getting the route from a third party (such as a rally organisation or tour company for example), they will need a number of different file formats (never mid the cables connectors etc) to provide the route electronically for all the different GPS units riders may be using. If you've never used a tulip style road book, then you won't realise how useful (and how much information can be imparted) it is having a roll of paper infront of you! Of course you may well have a GPS unit too - most often to give you a position reading that relates to what is on the paper instructions. In rallyes you'd use an IMO computer too, to accurately count the distance between the instructions in the road book. Hope that clarifies? xxx ps. Yeah ok i can see the need for it if your competing in a rally/race, but i still don't see the need for touring arround on a trip?

i would imagine if you ever go to somewhere like Morocco (which is entirely feasable these days) or anywhere where the road signs are crap, and your GPS packs up, you'll think to yourself "hmm, maybe a paper hard copy isn't such a bad idea"

Tenere Crash Damage
Came off my Tenere at about 40mph today into a soft loamy field near Thetford !
Damage was : screen came off in one piece - having sheared off all the attaching black plastic bolts ( good design) as I went through it ! Just needs new bolts . Front left indicator head was found lying in the field - might go back together onto stem. Indicator mounting grey panel had its two locating pins snapped off where they go into the tank .Might try using some spare plastic bolts to make replaceable "dowels" saving buying a new one each time . But the worst damage was to the tank , must have flexed as it went down and cracked off the paint beneath the indicator - no leaks or anything - luckily so hopefully can find some near match paint . Yesterday after some off-road drop-downs, we did speak about the cost of the replacement parts. I did ride Honda bikes for a couple of years. Everything (even the screws!!!!) have massive prices. Therefore, I was always looking for after-market replacement parts or good protection (think crashbars). I was stunned about the Yamaha price-list.
The Tenere is practical crash-proof (really, I've seen the proof of that yesterday). The only parts that may need replacement, are reasonable cheap. Good thinking of mister Yamaha. (and another good reason to use the machine for what he was designed for, Allroad!!!!!) |
