1st Impressions - XT660X 2006

I have only had the bike a week or so but I have put a few km on it now so I thought I would write about my opinons on the bike. Both the good and the bad.

I had read quite a lot of this forum about the surging etc, but on picking it up I was aware of it being fairly volatile but not too much of an issue, and I guess I was caught up in the excitement of finally owning a bike again after a 5yr break. I put its surging down to my amateurish throttle control!!!!. Plus it kind of takes a few days to get used to where everything is. It is my first supermoto so the riding position is all different to what I am used to.

I must admit I love a lot about this bike, it has made me hooked on supermotos. I am tempted to by another for when my english buddies come over and visit, but not sure if the wife will let me..... :(

So all was good I was finally settling into the bike, until last night. Last night changed everything. The bloody thing cut out on me on a roundabout and almost threw it down the road. Plus it was surging like a game of 'Buckeroo'. 1st and 2nd gears were almost uncontrolable unless accerlating hard. (3rd and 4th were fine though and the surge less evident). I thought - no Number3 its not you - its the bloody bike!!!. I of course was pretty nervous on the ride back home, constantly expecting it to cut out again, or a repeat of the event that had happened 10mins before.

So as soon as I got home I printed off the CO increase instructions, and upped my settings by 8. I took it out again tonight for 10mins to see if it had made difference. Thank God it had. And quite a big one too.

I rode down a deserted road in 2nd gear keeping the throttle in exactly the same position. Before the bike would have surged forward and backward like a kicked mule, but now it was smoother although with a hint of surge in the background. I think tongiht I will increase the CO by 2 more to see if that helps. And I am going to increase the idle speed too.

So now the bike is restored to how I wanted it to be in the first place. Low speed roundabouts are no longer nervous adventures, and the bike on a whole feels very planted and safe once more.

On my way home I was close to driving the thing through Yamaha's shop window, but I have calmed down now and excited to get back out on it again!!!!

Number3 I have the 07 spec bike got it 1st of March and was afrade to do any mods to it! I got a bit fed up with the surging so I up,d the CO by 10 and stuck with it as it smoothed out a lot but was still a bit of a hand full in 2nd and 3rd gear so off came the seat to find the air box snorcle and off with that too!!! What a huge differance!! GET THE SNORCLE OFF!!

and?
did you notice any difference?

Number3 06-04-08 00:01

Yes big difference. The bike is now much better, and doesnt really surge at all now. Its not 100% but its a different bike to the one I collected from the shop a couple of weeks ago.

Which is good for two reasons........

1. I now dont have to drive the bike through Yamaha's shop window.

and

2. My planned purchase of the OTR 2-into-1 system can now go ahead as planned!!!!

(plus the rear LED light converion, the mini LED indicators, the fitting of hand guards, new super-sticky tires, the fitting of a rev counter etc etc but please dont tell the wife!!!!!)
