I work for the Old Bill in NZ. 21 years on. :047:
|
After leaving school did an apprenticeship at Rolls Royce and Qualified as autospark. Then got my P.S.V license and drove Buses for a couple of years. After that I helped to run a family buisness for 12 years. While doing that got my HGV1 so I then went Truck Driving. Now I am Driving Trains which I have done for about 8 years. Its great can do 100mph and not worry about the flashing blue lights.:nana::50:

Drove forklifts in Durban harbour unloading ships until I had enough money to pay for flying lessons.
Now fly 777's for Continental Airlines based in New York (Newark) Must have one of the longest commutes to work, Durban, Jhb, NY before I even start! Have loved it but the commute can make you a bit ratty for a few days. :Gangsta2_9BI664: |
Another IT Monkey me. As the only IT guy employed by a company that has 6 offices in the UK, 1 in the US, 1 in France, 1 in South Africa, 1 in China and 1 in Germany I am basically the IT everything.
From programming to system maintenance, cisco firewalls to PDA's and setting up PC's it all ends up at my door. That said the work is easy enough (too easy at times, it can get a bit boring) and the money is decent. Was still happier when I used to be a milkman though, best job in the world !!! |
I went to college and got my spark's NVQ's, but got offered a job that paid better (at the time) to become a telecoms engineer and did that for 2 and half years, then ran a bar for a few months, and even had to dress up as brewster the bear for the kids, but got bored of it so went back to telecoms, while studying for my CCNA, which now makes me an IT geek.
Then got a two week job on the install at the kings cross rebuild, but managed to stay on it for nearly year and a half, when the next install, maintenamce company who came on to the site offered me a job to install the PAVA, after that was done, i was moved on to the maintenance team, which is a wicked little number, so now i have been there for about 3 years, not bad as i was only ment to be on the site for 2 weeks. |
Did several different jobs at IT firms after finishing my uni studies (First Germanic Philology and Linguistics, then AI). Then went back to uni to do research and teach in AI. But started to miss the stress of the private sector:104:
Currently, I work as a product manager for a company developing medical software. |
Hey!

I work with loads of equipment from gearboxes and huge valves to motors and 16,000hp diesel engines (16 cylinder, 1000hp each) I also do some fabricating and the occasional bit of tig welding (the easiest kind of welding there is in my opinion) |
well ive spent all the years i remember at skl and ive decided to go to uni to do mechanical engineering, find out my a level results this time next week, very excited nervous and just want to get it out the way, the only part of uni im not lookin forward to is not be able to take my bike :(

I'm a carbide metallurgist. My everyday job is basically quality control, with the occasional customer investigation. I studied ONC science, HNC and then degree level materials engineering. So I have a BEng degree (admittedly a mere 2.2, but my excuse is that I was also working 40 hours plus as QA Metallurgist for the final year and a bit.
My field is very specialised, so much so that in 4 years at uni, we did only a couple of weeks of powder metallurgy, and I knew more than the bloke trying to teach us.... In the first lecture I had cause to question him, I explained I was already a powder metallurgist, and he didn't speak to me again. I have a 'personal' interest in the field of corrosion studies which stems from years of Land Rover ownership. I also did a NEBOSH general certificate in Health and Safety, as I began to develope an interest during studying nuclear processes at Uni, and then again during some supervisor management studies. |
i'm a bus driver, great job if it wasn't for all the passengers and stops and other traffic on the road (bikes exempt)
we aren't all as bad as we,re painted to be ha. |
Done a few different things since leaving school but ignoring the odd paper round or two it goes like this;
6 months - architectural technician 12 years - cartographer for military survey 12 years - university lecturer in mapping science and waste management 8 years - waste manager for local government and private industry .....so there you have it, currently looking after the planet and all the crap you lot throw away :laughing8: Along the way I've managed to bag a few qualifications including; HND in Cartography and Surveying BSc (Hons) in Built Environment (1st class) MSc in Waste Management (Distinction) The upshot is that I'm definately as old as you think I am but not nearly as clever as the qualifications might suggest !!!!:009: |
Spent 20 years in the motor trade as mechanic, working mainly on cars & LGV's. Working as a Paramedic for the last 7 years - been to some nasty jobs involving bikers, still keep swinging my leg over the XTX though!

I'm a technical support engineer.
I help IT administrator having problem with their SAN/NAS storage. |
I'm an Intake Officer for a large poultry processing firm. I check incoming raw material against specification, log data, issue non-conformances etc. Boring and it's always cold but it keeps the roof over my head and my ass on the XT! I also make a bit of money on the side drumming with the rock band I'm in or various wedding bands.

Hi All.
I've been in IT Security for nearly 20 years, stopping people from hacking into networks and then catching people that have. I also manage the team that monitors all user access and internet browsing, which means I get to help HR sack people for browsing or accessing things that they are not allowed to do. (You wouldn't believe what some people browse when they are meant to be at work) Currently I work for a rather large Telecoms company that had the slogan "Making the most of now" and sponsors a very well known Grand Prix team. Previously I worked for the government catching the Civil Serpents from doing things that they shouldn't have. |
The short answer is I test drugs for a living.
But sometimes that just gets me funny looks and an assumption that I'ma drug fueled fiend. So the long answer is, after doing a BTEC ND in Science I've pretty much had a career in Quality Control. I've worked in a few industries Tannery Oil blending plant Uranium refinery Pharmaceuticals I've worked the past 11 years in the pharmaceutical industry. I've enjoyed it and get satisfaction that I'm helping make sure the medicine people rely on is up to standard. In the past couple of years especially my job has migrated to making sure that we are making the best use of computerized systems we have in the lab. I'm currently involved with the installation and validation of a database that should record most activities and results in the labs. It's interesting now but I can see it getting boring after it's all implemented and becomes routine, I'll worry about that then though. |
I'm working(leading) at a small gas station, i'm lerarning to be a web-programmer, and i'm trading/reapiring computer's, laptop's and computer parts.
It was my childhood dream to buy a big, 1 cilinder, noisy, smelly(after i remove the cat.) bike. I'm 22 and one of my dream came true. :blob7: |
Must have missed this thread before.
I am an IT Lecturer in an FE College. Best Bits: 13 weeks holiday a year and the day flies by. Worst Bits: students :003: |
I guess I have missed this topic too - among others. I'm a freelancing tanker driver. I transport liquid chemicals mostly within Scandinavia but sometimes to other countries as well. I like the life on the road and also the variety of the job. I'm freelancing since I like to keep my freedom so that I can go travelling with my bike when and especially how long I want to. So I get the money from the road and I put it into the road. Is there something wrong with me?

Living the Dream lol
See if any of you can top this for a boring job, I make cardboard boxes, all day, every day, millions of em! I even have a third level qualification as a Boxmaker! There was even an episode of the Simpsons where Bart visited a box factory, and was asked would he like to do this when he grows up, and he replied "Its always been the dream, man!"
So I am living the dream :laughing5: But what may be of interest to the forum, I am also a Steel Rule Cutting Die maker by trade, and so have made cutting dies that stamp out gaskets, labels etc. (and boxes of course!), so if anyone would like to know anything in that area just ask. I unfortunately do not have access to any equipment to make any cutting dies any more. Jed |
Work for Harley-davidson as a parts advisor and valleter, soon to be a techy.

I'm a specialised plant engineer working mainly in the gas industry (both on-shore and off-shore) but also doing water and hydro work. I hire, sell and maintain computerised welding equipment for welding plastic pipes, anything from 25mm to 1600mm. I work mainly in Scotland and Ireland but sometimes in Europe and occasionally in more far flung exotic places like Cuba, Fiji and Azerbaijan.
I'm just back from a few days up in Wester Ross, fantastic roads and weather and I'm stuck in a van being passed by loads of bikes!!!!!!! It's not fair. |

How I earn my crust!
I am a Software/solution performance Analyst currently contracting at one of Australia's large banks.
The work is interesting, the politics in banks suck though! |
Keeping me in motorbikes
I work in the electricity industry, mainly commissioning new equipment onto the 400kV transmission system, you know, new generating stations and transformers etc. It can be stressful, signing on the dotted line to say that multi-million pound equipment is safe to be put into service and also issueing safety documents to allow work on high voltage bits and pieces. Been doing it since I left school, cough years ago.:080:
