Hi Kev

1st time l put a POST on your site...
I just picked up a virtually new untouched XT660X this week. still under Yamaha warranty and had 1500km on the clock...
2 years ago l wanted a bike to get back on the road after a short absence, my friend after months convincing me, i bought a 2002 R1. BIG mistake,
i wanted a XT660R/X didnt matter..sold the bike a couple of weeks ago and bought my dream bike of the XT660X. l dont like road bikes, trailbikes and adventure bikes are for me..

After searching your site, l found this mod. my bike done the popping sound, l followed your advice and done the mod..and mate what a big difference its made to the bike. Feels so much better and seems to take off a lot better...

Im in the process of buying the MTC exhausts and dealing with Paul from there. He gave me a great price on a set of mufflers. Just finalising everything then payment will be made.
and lm looking into a K&N air filter and Iridium plug for it also...

thanks
again
Ash

hi..
dose the AIS feed air into both Exhaust ports ?..
or just the right as shown in the pic...
why I ask I'm wondering if that could be the reason
why the right pipe gets hotter than the left ????

i have a 2006 xtx with pipercross panel filter.i will buy leovince or arrow exhausts next month.i would like to know if it is better to buy an AGR blanket from OTR or do the kev's mod with the bolt.if i will use the blanket from OTR it's necessary to remove all the ais valve?
does this mod have any effect to the fuel consumption of the bike?

martyn 09-03-12 13:16

ais mod

Is it ok to do ais mod on a 2011 xt

If you want to remove weight then remove the AIS, otherwise blocking off the pipe will be fine.

The mod has no effect on the fuel consumption.

It sure is if you are running after market pipes.

martyn 10-03-12 09:20

What with the other 'end'?

Hi,
I'm looking to do this mod shortly on my standard 2010 XTZ.
When I pull off the pipe and block it, what do I do with part that the pipe was previously attached to?
Thanks for this and the great site.
Jon

PS I typed the above and then read further that I shouldn't do the AIS mod with standard exhaust, however, others might appreciate the answer!

Mort 06-08-12 22:02

Put it back on which either end you disconnected it from.:newspaper:

J-P-W 06-08-12 22:04

Hi Mort, do you mean block the pipe and then reconnect it?

Mort 06-08-12 22:16

Yes mate:homework:

Hi Kev,

I'm an old hot rodder from the 70s. Air Injection started about then. It's actually not so innocent with regards to the motor. Burning the leftover HC in there generates a lot of heat. When building a V8 for power, we would always remove the AI because otherwise the exhaust manifolds and even the cylinder head exhaust ports would get too hot. I remember seeing manifolds actually cracked from the AI heat.

So in fact, the mod you suggest here should be GOOD for the cylinder head and header pipes. Less excessive heat is a good thing.

FYI and pleased ta meat ya!

AIS Bung

If anyone has removed the hose from their air-box then blocked the hole with a bung, what diameter did you use? My bike's not at home for me to check =P

Cheers!

AIS Plug

After a few months of riding with the AIS plugged I found that the mod didn't reduce, or increase the amount my '04 XTX crackled & popped.

I've reconnected the AIS after removing the bolt I had snugly blocking the pipe and haven't noticed any change in the frequency that the bike pops, although it seems more prone to doing so on a warm day.

The bike has a MM/Scorpion 2-1 pipe fitted, DNA Stage 1 & 2 Filter kit and a PC3 with a custom map.

Mort 22-03-13 09:36

All it dose is sucks air in from the filter box on closed throttle.Give it more fuel that will help.:hcrap:

Prit 29-09-15 11:01

Hi Kev,

I am new to the forum and the XT world. I just bought a XT660Z ABS (2014) and realized that the machine has some serious popping from the exhaust. Would your MOD featured above also work for the XTZs? Is there anything specific that I would have to care for?

Cheers
Prit.

Hi KEV i have blocked the pipe and re-fitted it but my bike is still popping any more ideas for me please i have a 660x 2004

Thanks Steve..

englishbandit 08-03-16 22:04

Hi kev does it matter if you do not block the AIS hose off if I have after market cans on. I do not mind the popping and banging. Just wondered is it best to do it or is it just down to wether you like the noise or not.
