Aluminium side cases

Someone wrote in some forum, that teneres aluminium side cases looks crap in real, but not in pictures. Is that true, maybe I wait to order the side cases in till I see them live.

CaptMoto 15-12-07 21:17

No mate I guarantee you they look and feel excellent, sturdy and of good design.

maxwell123455 16-12-07 13:01

I think most will go for a different after market set of alu panniers, not cause the yamaha ones are not good just most if spending money on panniers probably want something different and speical.

TonySoprano 17-12-07 17:05

I think the Yamaha ones look pretty good, I asked the Yamaha guy to open them for me and they seemed better made than the Touratech ones, not seen any metal mules so I cannot comment on those but from checking the website they are making some to fit the new Tenere, with prices ranging from 749 upto 841 including frame and fitting kit. see the link below.

Hold on whats that my hearts stopped beating and i am in hospital, why?? You just saw the price of those panniers.
How much where they?
74............. beep yep he's away again.

They are just taking the piss, to get them on your XTR you have to pay 350 for an exhaust system then buy panniers and frames which total over 1000. I dont think they will sell too many at that price for the tenere either. If Yamaha's own ones are anything around 500 they will sell better. I still cant get over that price.

SW Motech

Ive come across these panniers from SW Motech on the web, i havent seen them in the "flesh" as such. A choice of finishes and they dont seem to be very expensive. Regards mounting the boxes, i personally would go with a Hepco and Becker pannier rails and the Touratech mounting kit

On the site it says 16 week waiting time.

If you fancy making your own panniers, i found this link as well.

I've ordered the pannier rack of Hepco&Becker, the Lock-it system. Same quality as the conventional racks by H&B, but you can take it off rather easily when you don't want to use it. Partnumbers:
Lock-it rack: 650.4526-0001
Upper luggage rack: 650.4526-0101
Adapter kit for alu panniers: 700.201

The pannier rack costs about 225,- euro's, delivery aug/sept. Link: www.hepco-becker.de . Greetz, Hans.

Having only just got the bike the thought of paying out lots more money for panniers is putting me off. There are some panniers available that cost much less than even the Yamaha ones. on Sw motech there are two types one set look alot like metal mules the other set is even cheaper.

I have heard bad revies of the touratech boxes compared to MM's but I think both are way over priced.

The sw motech trax boxes look good in black and will suit my Black Tenere.

I have some old boxes that are homemade and I may try to make them fit or just make some more. Its not so hard and the materials are not expensive.

CaptMoto 21-07-08 11:54

If you are any good at DIY someone posted a link in the Tenere luggage department with full descriptions and pictures, which was well detailed, on how to make then yourself, which I found to be very impressive.

We are aware that the Yamaha ones are very expensive, luckily there are other alternatives.

Er, hang on guys. Metal Mule have got MY Z'ed for experimental work and have only just got the frame rails made. They are working on an engine guard, taller screen, bash plate, lowering links for rear suspension to name a few of the mods they have in mind. I have just returned from a break and am very busy so they will have the bike for the next couple of weeks. The prices are not out yet and I would suggest contacting them direct for more info rather than speculate. I am promised a set of pannier frames for letting them use my bike as a guinea pig and expect to get more freebies.
:pjrmoony_1JJHDG:
......like a discount on some panniers!

How long are they keeping your bike?? Last time i calculated for my XTR a set of panniers + rails + the 2 into 1 pipe it was over 1000, prices have went up from then. I would be hoping to get a few more freebies than just some pannier rails (normally around 200-250 or so) either that or some heavy discounting on the other items

steveD 21-07-08 23:00

I have said that they can have it for another couple of weeks as I will not have the time to ride it. I will be working 7 days a week for the forseeable future and cannot bear to see it and not be able to play. I am self employed and take work as I get it so the trade of is that I will spend a lot of time later on in the year biking. .................and yes i will get a good deal on more bits!

Old Git Ray 21-07-08 23:13

Pannier piccys tomorrow.

I am fortunate to have a set of panniers and a top box already.

As there is obvious interest I will take some detailed pictures and post them tomorrow.

cotthem 25-07-08 10:58

I'm still waiting for touratech to come up with a panniersystem.
I like the panniers from SW-Motech doh.

Within 3 weeks I'm going to the French and Italian Alps with some friends (KTM's :fing23:and a transalp) and without girlfriend. My Ortliebbag and a small backpack will do just fine for now.

I'm going on a "less is more" trip:thumbleweed:

But I will need panniers, because my girlfriend doesn't want to carry any luggage on her bike:120:

So, I'm always the mule on our trips
girls....tsssssss

I emailed Touratech UK a while ago and here is their reply:

Hi,

We will definitely be bringing parts out for the new Tenere but at present I don’t think this will be until maybe early to mid next year.

Sorry I can’t give you any more info on this .

Neil

Doesn't look too good. I'm contemplating building my own panniers, but I will have to buy a ready made rack.

cotthem 25-07-08 16:47

@Molgan:rofl[1]:

@klonkie: That's sad news, Touratech is to much bussy with BMW I think

SW-motech maybe.

tenere doug 25-07-08 17:21

panniers

I've ordered a Hepco and Becker system for mine, and although it's not arrived yet, it should be here within the next three weeks, apparently. I'm happy to go with this firm, as I've used their stuff before and quality is superb. You can order through http://www.motobins.co.uk/ , they also do a centre stand.
I have tried Touratech too, for other stuff, but as has already been mentioned, they only seem interested in BMW at the moment.

Molgan 29-07-08 12:57

Got my Yamaha panniers today. They look and feel solid though I don't think they can take impact to the same level as let's say Touratech. Fits the bike well and the minimalistic mounting kit is sweet. One huge disappointment is the key lock, feels way too cheap for something that cost me like 900€. The plastic lever I need to press to get the key out after mounting/releasing the cases have no feedback and getting the key out of the lock never works on the first attempt. Not an appealing thought to be standing in the wet and cold with the key stuck in the case unable to open it one day.

My advice would be to save some pennies and go for aftermarket panniers if you haven't already ordered. Got a sweet deal on mine though so I'm not in tears. :)

Edit: And now when I see how badass they look on the bike I forgive all their flaws. :D

cotthem 29-07-08 17:07

Thx Molgan for the advise:045:

stuxtttr 30-08-08 13:03

I would holdfire on the trax panniers there has been some discussions on these over at the HUBB and a guy said his leaked like crazy.

How does the Yamaha Top box feel on the bike, I was fitting my own box the other day and its going to have to sit a long way back if its not going to infringe on my pillions comfort.

Alex Diaconescu 17-09-08 16:09

What do you say about the Alu coffer from Polo? The Zarges? 120€ for one piece! 240€ the coffers+20€ lock system+20€ mounting kit... 280€!!!

For more details visit: POLO MOTORRAD.

I think I will go for it! I have asked and they fit allright!

have fitted the zega pros from touratech and what a great pr.
good strong frame and boxes so solidly built.
previously had the yamaha panniers and let me down twice when used twice.
original set the lever operation broke on one and NEW 2nd set with the shorter keys that should have been all singing and dancing left me in the alps with bent key(twisted in the lock)
would advise the touratech cases anyday.
or i would have used the peli cases like scottnet but couldnt cope with the side opening.

Hi FINmud

I've got a set of Off-The-Road panniers and pannier frames on my Tenere and I'm happy with them. The panniers aren't as strong as Metal Mule's but strong enough and much cheaper. The frames seem to be as good as MM's and with them the panniers come closer to the rider than with MMs. Don't know about the original Yamaha panniers but I've seen SW Motech's Trax panniers and didn't really like the quality.

I noticed that you live in Finland too so feel free to send me a PM and come and see the panniers if you wish. I live in Parikkala and so does my friend who also has a Tenere and he has Metal Mule panniers on it.

Yep.

I've got these too.

They make much better seats than the normal Zega's....

Just realized that I replied to an old message so I guess you have bought your panniers already :).

hi,

On the Zarges cases i can, after 80000km, honestly say that they are great, as long as you don't hit the ground with it... I landed the side of a case on a rock with 5km/h and there was crack in it. The sheetalu is just to thin.

The frames OTR makes are undestructable though, so i would go for an OTR frame and H&B ot TT cases. Or better, an OTR frame and Really strong cases from Bernd Tesch.

regards,

regards,

Or just dont fall :P.

I have Sw-Motech cases, the frame looks even stronger than the TT one.
And its also easy to dissasemble.

The cases themselves also look quite solid, havent tested them at crashing.
They arent as big as the TT ones, but i have enough room.

I also had the Zega's on my BMW, very nice but also very hard to put on/take off once they are packed.
