side stand

today i waz out riding on my bike,i parked it on the grass went in the cafe when i came out the bike waz leaning at an alarming angle ,i thought it had sunk in the grass, when i looked at the sidestand it waz bent has this happened to anyone else?and is this covered under the waranty? :dontknow:the bike is 14 months old

CaptMoto 01-07-07 23:40

Yes a few people in the history of this forum have had their sidestand bent, most of them caused by themselves by sitting on the bike with it down. They are not very strong and they are not covered by warranty unless they just break in an unconventional place. But..... you can always try with your dealer. (they are not very expensive anyway)

thanks fran im not one of those who sits on the bike with the :no[1]: sidestand down my dealer is pretty good ..so ive got a good chance ...

if I remember rightly they are 45 quid before vat, an RAC towing flat bed truck once bent one of mine and they had to buy it back it came to about 64 all including fitting. (1.5 years ago)

PadzUK 12-02-08 21:01

Bloody ell, I think I'll bend it back ,weld on a splint an hope for the best!!! Thanx

maxwell123455 12-02-08 22:34

My xtr came with a bend sidestand and i got told it was around 30 but i didnt wanna get a new one so took the bend one off, heated it rebent it, and then sprayed it up, its holding after 1 month of use but the paint around the heated area is started to peel only a wee bit.

It is possible but to get a splint in would mean the it would be very very small as if you have CCC cans the link pipe is very close to the back of the stand where you want to put a splint. If you know what i mean so clearance could be a issue.

PadzUK 13-02-08 08:16

wot did you heat it with? Specialist welding equipment, a blowtorch or something like that?

maxwell123455 13-02-08 09:46

A blow torch, but tired not too heat it too much as they will weaken the steel as its probably been cold worked to strengthen it

you know like you see in the movies taking the sword out of furnance beating it and in to cold water.

I put a special curve in my stand about half way down near the spring holder so the bike would sit more up right, therefore less pressure on stand.

PadzUK 14-02-08 17:59

Many thanks Max, I'll let you know how I get on.:smilies0942:

maxwell123455 14-02-08 20:34

No bother, i have a few pictures some where if you want or i could take a few pictures cause at the moment my bikes going no where fast as i have a front punture (poo).

Techno Prisoners 15-02-08 20:40

I bent my sidestand back into shape by taking it off, trapping the (bit that fastens to the bike) end in between the steel bars of a 40ft trailer and pulling it back straight with a scaffold tube. Crude, but effective. Have just asked the local dealer for a price = 28 inc vat. I'll put up with the slightly bent version until they deliver the new one.
