Hi all....
Had a 2004 grey which I loved and had to sell... Now I am taking delivery of a new blue XT at the weekend... Saturday looks good for ride too. I'll keep you all informed about how I get on.... I plan on riding through the winter so that'll be a good test of uncle yammy.... can't wait.... |
Well done for staying faithfull to the mighty XT and congratulations on your new bike

2007 xtx
Guys,
Had the 2005 xtx for two years with the LeoVince x3 cans. 16000 km and a great bike! So great that I bought the 2007 xtx in the colour black. The bike runs better than the 2005 bike. More smooth. Keep you informed about the difference. Have to put the first 1000 km on the bike yet........... Bull |
Oh good, another two timer!! :welcome:

I have an 07 XTR. It is great. We have done 2000km without any problems. There have been a few modifications.
1. Sprayed the orange screen matt black and replaced the poo brown stickers with sensible black and white ones from an 04 model. (Really, what were you thinking Yamaha?) 2. Replaced the flimsy steel handle bars with renthals and added acerbis hand/lever protectors. (Really, what were you thinking Yamaha?) 3. Replaced the OEM Sirac tyres with Continental TKC80's for more offroad capability. I had a lot of fun with the Sirac's on the dry Spanish roads but off road needs nobbys. I put a Givi monolock 37ltr top box and backrest on and my girlfriend is grateful. I have Givi soft panniers as well. This option is not Metal Mule but it is cheep, practical and looks good. I bought this bike as a more practical and relyable alternative to a Triumph I own (and used to love). Since I bought the XT I have not ridden the Triumph once. I love the XT. I think the biking public should all try one for a week. I feel quicker than most bikes around town and on twisty roads. I like the high agressive riding position. The front brake could be stronger, ...but then it would be dangerous offroad. I feel a very small ammount of surging around town. I would like to "test drive" a power commander to see if it is any great improvement. The styling is great IMHO. I trust the relyability of the electrics more than I would the Pegaso, (no valid reason apart from the Japanise connection) and I would expect parts to be easier to sourse in remote locations. The bike is not at all pretentious. I like BMW bikes but I am terrified I will wind up riding like a BMW car driver. It is a shame the exhaust headers go under the engine. I am sure it was no accident. Maby they were designed as a sort of emergency engine guard. There must be a reason? The XT is light and cheap to buy and run (compared to BMW/KTM). I can drop it and I don't care. I can push it through deep sand and mud. I can leave it on the street overnight without worry. Sure it is not a KTM or BMW but in the world of compromise that is choosing a bike these days, I feel I have made a really good choice. Still, if they could add 15hp and remove 15kg it would be better. |
I handed down my 2005 xtr to my son and bought myself a 2007 Fazer 600.Had the bike for 4 weeks and today traded it in on a 2007 xtr.All I can say is I missed the fun facter of this bike.(Low end torque and offroad capabilities to name but a few.)Anyway here is the comparison between my 2005 model and 2007.Remember I live at 1500 meters above sea level.
The PINGING AT LOW REVS IS GONE.The surging is gone.(Better fuel mixture due to addition of fuel sensor on exhaust).Smoother gear changes.Especially when going from neutral to 1st.Not that thud anymore when engaging 1st gear. The rest is basicaly the same.I will only be doing the DNA stage 2 mod and put it on the dyno to see if a fuel controler is neccassary. Will post dynograph asap.:icon_thumleft: |
Well done......
You did the right thing.   |
Yamaha put on a track day & invited riders to test all their 08 models.
Had a great morning that ended in tragedy. One of the riders came off & hit a tree & died after 25 Min of CPR. He fell off right in front of us, what a sick feeling I now have. The track is a short circuit track with lots of tight cornes. Lukily I know the track, haven been there before on a Porsche drive day so had a bit of a in site to the track before riding. A bit of sad news, anyway this what I thought of the nex XTX. Well I was promist a ride on a 2008 model XTX by Yamaha Australia & as I expected is was an 07 model. Not to worry 07 08 as long as it has a lambda probe I was happy. We had an advanced rider training course first, then were let out on the track to play. My first impressions of the new 2007 model. I like it, has better lines & looks more sleeker. I like the new head light, & tank cowlings it looks better finished off in real life. A definite improvement in looks for me over the 04 model. The rear swinging arm is a work of art, not really, it is better braced & does help with the handling. Front suspension is really soft & on the track, did not like it at all, for the road it would be fine. That would be my first mod I would do, front spacer kit & 15 weight oil. Definitely down on power compared to my 04, which is fully moded up. Easily done to the 07 to get it up there though. Very smooth in general, riding with the new mapping (10 ECU) is quite a big improvement over a standard 04 XTX model & Yamaha has done it right for a change, well done Yamaha. We can finaly get rid of the bad fueling omen involving the XT660. Riding all the latest 08 models from R1, FZ1, R6, FZ6 & a few others the XTX was the fastest on the track & suprised nearly all the riders. Ok on a normal race track the XT would be floged, but today it did turn a few heads. A few of the guys even ask to ride mine to see what it goes like tuned & switched between the 07 & my 04. Yamaha might get some sales from this demo. Final verdict after nearly high siding the FZ1 out of a corner, with the cramped riding position of the R1, I have been swinging between a new road bike or a new XTX for 08 & this ride day has made up my mind, my new bike for next year will be a XTX. http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...x/DSCF2052.jpg http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...x/DSCF2056.jpg http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...x/DSCF2040.jpg http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...x/DSCF2039.jpg |
First of all may I say on behalf of the whole worldwide biking community, sadly RIP to the poor bloke that fell and died. It's a real shame.
Kev, your review puts it all into prospective, I had no doubt that Yamaha, would have received so many complaints worldwide, that even if they opted to ignore them at the end of the day they must have received the negative reports from their accountants as a result from the fact that they had to replace God knows how many ECU's and TPS's WOLRDWIDE that these surely must have blown a hole in their estimated profit. Something had to be done, and like you've said apart from the cosmetic changes of the light cowlings and fairings, they have managed to carry out 3 major improvements such as the new mapping and ECU, the TPS and finally the rear swingarm. Well people as you can see there is still faith in this great manufacturer of bikes we have all come to love after many years of service, the reason why we have all put up with the problems of the 04-06 XT's didn't take away the passion and fun we get from these bikes. Here's looking at a much brighter future for all the 07 plus owners of these wonderful bikes. Great report Kev and... once again R.I.P. fellow biker our thoughts are with his friends and family. |
Update
Hi all...
So sorry to read about our fellow biker that fell in the previous thread. RIP and our thoughts to the family at this time. To business then... My XTX (in racing blue) is just as awesome as before with subtle differences: The fuelling is much improved. Still some surging at low speed and I have increased the CO by 10 from 8 to 18. Much better though! Details: Engine The pick up and response is much improved. Does not bog down at all. The engine braking is incredible. I know the ratio has not been changed but it seems stronger than before. The engine has NOT stalled (ever) even when I have blipped it several times off the run at the lights! Wow! Getting around 50 MPG commuting at the moment. The 1st gear is short but I quite like it (no difference to before then). The bike revs out easier this time with stock pipes. No issues, no funny noises and sounds great even on stock cans. Clurch / GB The clutch (mine anyway) is super smooth. Slick gear changes throughout up and down the box. Nothing dropped or slipped. Clutchless changes, no issue, even down the box (just watch out for slides). Chassis / Suspenders The frame and shocks look nice. The new 07 ones are still Paoli and are now BLACK and look really nice. Softish but fantastic on blighty roads, no issues. The rear is slightly harder and better for it. Will be great two up. The grab rails and pillion pegs are excellent and much improved in terms of appearance and comfort values. Excel rims as before are to die for and I have to say the stock boots are great as before but will lob AVONS on when I have worn the P's down. Should get around 3k out of the rear! The brakes are awesome, both front and rear so far, no issues. Looks Superb and different but not overly so but the net result is more SM look which I prefer. Both the front and the back are better finished and the quality of the plastics seem better, thicker and richer colours. The sidepods of the X is different and better I think. they fit more flush! The lights are essentially the same as before with the exception of the main light which believe me (at night commuting) is awesome to behold. I get myops in cars flash me BIG time if I leave the MB on! Idiot lights / Cockpit These are unchanged and I like them that way. Simple and effective. The front cowling though is much lower which tends to expose the speedo to muck, especially in off road mode. Which (these bikes will do)! I know, I have been over mud, gravel, through a flood and in a field so far. No issues and I mean NONE and using the stock tyres too. Costs Running costs are low so far. 50MPG and 35 TAX 6 months/ 100 FC insurance and you get all this fun! Wow. Is the 07 model worth it: On the engine mods and looks and improvements alone...YES! I have owned a KTM LC4 640 before my XT660X 04 model and I have to tell all that given the slating this bikes receives from certain London based groups and SM forums; the comments are unfounded and are plain WRONG! Any proper SM pilot will tell you after just 10 miles your arms will vibrate off for a start using a KTM / Husaberg / CCM / Husqvarna etc, forget taking the other half and your looking at 1500 mile services and 70 miles range for starters. With exception to the latest KTM 690 and Aprilia Pegaso the XTX will handle, make a ton, beat a 911 Turbo from a standing start to 60, beat sportbikes around twisties, carry your other half, go off road and all on a budget! This is my second XTX and in two years time I will look to change it either for another or maybe the new XTZ which looks tasty. Either way, another XT! Go and get a test ride and be prepared to be converted! Have a good Christmas everybody! |
foxthebiker
great post i think you are what they call hooked on the XT as am i at the moment, ive got the R which can still get the naughty side out but i wouldnt say as much as the X with the more road basis tyres would. But i still have fun taking on anything on my daily commute to and from uni and still get great pleasure taken it up old country roads with sh+t, grass, gravel, hedges, cows etc on the roads and it just keeps wanting more and more. Coming from a V twin i understand what you mean by the bike picks up but still its a single which means you have to have it in the revs to pick up unless you get the dreaded chain slap/slapping. But as you say compared to proper SM bikes this is a do it all type but master of none type. Same as sports bikes great for doing one thing and thats it but all rounders will keep up but most people say oh but a sports bikes better (yea when on a race track and not the normal roads, yet us UK people still havent seemed to grasp at that concept yet) O and as for running costs you said "Running costs are low so far. 50MPG and 35 TAX 6 months/ 100 FC insurance and you get all this fun! Wow." I can see where your coming from depending on my riding style on the tank of petrol i can get anything from 50mpg-70mpg on my daily commute but dont tell me about your insurance i am still only 19 so Mr insurance still thinks i havent a clue how to ride even though i have 2 years no claims bonus, ride all year round, and still they all think norn iron is all like belfast (even though crim rates in belfast have been going down insurance people dont see that!!! k+obs) |
I Wanted a full SM and i got one ( In my eyes anyway)
Sounds the dogs, looks the part, handles like a dream. 2 year warrenty, and good service intervals, Let the better waether commence. |
Cheers Fozzer...shame your so far away....love to give it some beans on some back roads with you....
The insurance can be nightmare I agree, sorry to hear over there it's high. Actually, I have heard this elsewhere so I am not suprised. The bike is wicked it's true. Can't wait till I get on it again in a few hours...... Take care and stay safe bud.... |
fozzer
what i meant about the SM bit was most people will only class an SM bike as one of those bikes you see flying around a race track sliding it sideways into corners with no worrys about engine life, wrecking the bike etc. Most people will not class th XTX as a true out and out SM but as fox says why would you want one of them anyway after 10miles your arse is numb, you cant see anything cause of the vibs, and the thing soon runs out of petrol anyway, or breaks down. |

wot even a hardly dangerous?
nah..... |
Oh no
here comes the satnav holder story.............. ha ha:laughing11: |
Well concidering my friend rode my bike and he has riden 1000's of bikes (he's a bike mechanic) and his comment was he had never riden anything with so much vibration. Don't get me wrong, I like my XTX. It looks the biz, goes like stink, handles well but vibrates it's head off. As I've stated in other posts, I've killed 2 sat navs in 5 months and according to Garmin no other bike has done this. Not even a Hardley. This distruction process is totally to do with vibrations.
Oh, one other thing. I'm not the type of biker that raves about his bike trying to kid myself it's perfect. It is good but far from perfect. |
where do or what is your main speed type? 50-60mph most 70+
Just me bros came home from england and says middle lane on motorway is 80mph stuff (as he is like a sheep and always follows what everone else does). As most roads in england always seem to lead to a motorway just at those speed yes there are alot of vibes on the XT or any supermoto bike at that, but ride to national speed limits and i dont find them that bad. As for the connection system on your gps they give you i can understand why it breaks, there are no dampers in the system. It just bolts straight to your handle bars with no rubbers. Ask any engineer to look at it and say its breaking cause of vibs they should be able to point this out to some office person who hasnt a clue how to design something for a motorbike as they have just taken if straight from a car type connection and replace a sucker with a clamp.. techy part, force or energy is never lost it is transfered. Now your handle bars vibing have 3 main forces, kintec (movement), sound, wind(caused by vibes) when you bolt something onto the vibing part directly it will just continue this process onwards to the fixed part, still producing the same or possabily even more vibes due to length of fixing. Unless damped out by rubbers (which cause the vibs to turn to friction, which in turn goes to heat) this vibing will kill any electrical piece of kit as electrics dont like mass vibs because of all the small electric componets etc. |
The Garmin 550 sat nav is designed for a motorcycle and nobody has had one crack up on them like mine has IN THE WORLD (according to info from Garmin UK).
The ball mount is supposed to eliminate vibration but not on my bike. I've now got a Touratec holder for my sat nav and even that makes no difference. The Garmin is mounted on my rubber mounted handle bars but vibrations still get through. The XT660 is a very viby bike. There is no question about that for sure. |
See what did i tell you:digging:
|
That is mystery to me. I have been using the TomTom Rider now for over a year something like 15 months, what with my bike being as vibey as any other xt and the front wheel busier than a bunny wabbit on viagra... the tomtom is still working as normal. bigwink
|
..........apart from the power lead working loose on the TomTom Rider due to vibrations.
I've seen comments on both sat navs on various forums. Lots of people have problems with their Garmin but what I was trying to explain was people have problems even on their BMW's but the XT absolutely kills the Garmin Zumo. No other bike has done this to a Zumo. I've also seen comments on here stating that their bikes shed bolts like leaves in Autumn due to vibrations. There is no getting away with the fact that the XT engine vibrates a hell of a lot. It's bound to considering it has a piston with the girth of a 2L coke bottle. If anybody tells me their XT doesn't vibrate then it goes in one ear and out the other cos I know, I've got one. |
How do you hear " take the next right " with your helmet on bigwink

Manic i understand that the XT vibes alot, but as you said before the ball of the GPS mount is suppose to take the vibration out, but is not due to your GPS not working alot of the time, therefore this is a design fault. Garmin are taking the piss that this is the only probelm they have heard of. Whats happening is a boss of Garmin has seen it and has 2 options do we recall all the Garmin GPS units like yours and risk having a very big bill to pay or take the few people in the world that this is happening to and complain to them they its the only one we have heard about and replace a small number of units. End of the day its all about cost, and the road Garmin are going down is the cheaper option.
Why do you think triumph bonnevilles still have the same old spokes that break so many times? Same idea they cant admight to getting it wrong so triumph are getting around the idea by saying people are not doing the maintenance on them. But read through a manual and it says you are suppose to check every spoke before a ride (eh dont think so) but there is a few people who said they check there spokes before every big ride (30+) and they still had problems. as for a different subject what make are those ear phones, i have been looking a set like these for a while but only seem to be able to find the expensive ones at 80+ Any links please:023: |
07 XTX Thumbs Up
Went to my local Yamaha dealer today to tempt myself for early new year. They have loads of 07 models in all colours. Had a real good look at the blue with gold wheels version in particular. Overall I have to say its a nice piece of kit but I did notice one thing that really is poor compared to the earlier versions which is the headlight plastic hardly covers the clocks and instrument panel. Other than that very nice. The dealer was selling em at full whack with no discount (4899)!

07 spec XTX Review
Well I must be a glutten for punishment as I am now onto my second XT660X. I decided to go for the laest spec version (2007) this time round as the new changes seem to be good. Riding with the latest ECU and TPS has almost eliminated all the surging felt on the mk1 version (although a PCIII and custom map sorts this out). It is now completely smooth or as smooth as a big single can be. The suspension seems very firm at the moment but this may improve as I put the miles on it.
Excellent riding position offering excellent views all round, comfortable seat although a little hard but wide enough to accomodate my rear! As I have not ridden a bike for a few months one slight negative is it still only has 5 gears. As I am running in I am mindful of the excessive revs. The thing accelerates really quickly meaning you are soon out of gears. I dont really want to mess with the gearing as I would then need a speed healer to correct the speedo. I will live with this as I am really having to pick faults, dont let this put anyone off its still very good. I have the stock Pirellis on at the moment and they seem ok, I love the Distanzias so the bench mark are those. I need to put more miles on before I can honestly comment on the stock tyres. The Pirellis look ok but I dont think the mileages on them are that great compared to the Avons. Overall, looks good, goes well, handles well, brakes superb and well worth the investment. I'm off now to put some miles on it. |
Tony.... about over reving it dont wory about that...just ride it like normal goin up th egears all the run in is about is ye dont throttle it an redline it in any gear....john
|
someone said he broke a couple of sat nav devices on the XTX and that this bike vibrates.
my 2cents: the other bikes that vibrate even more, do not need a navigator. they cannot go too far to need a map :D so, compared to the usual tourers it vibrates. compared to other 1cylinders. it is smooth! and I only have few km on it. I'll come back when I learn more. |
Quote:
There are 6000 speed cameras in the UK. The sat nav can inform me where they are located. A paper map won't.
Quote:
|
so... you use satellite navigation to find out about speed cameras. didn't know. then... it makes sense.
still, the wr400 vibrates more. so does Husky610 and ktm Lc4 |
