Tnr 660 DEAD!!!

Hi guys.
I searched but got no conclusive solution.
Please advise.

I parked the bike outside for 2 weeks under a flimsy cover. Its winter now, dry and no rain, ice or snow. Just well cold at night (3 deg). The bike worked perfectly. 2 weeks later and I want to start bike but NO electrics, no lights, no dash, no red led flashing, no socket power, no indicator, no clicking. DEAD. NOTHING. So I charged the battery overnight but nothing. I then (sort of) jumped the battery with a 12V spare car battery. The jumper cables were dodgy and old. But there was life! The lights, dash, circuit test and neutral all came on. Great!

So I pressed the starter button with the car battery still jumped to the bike battery and EVERYTHING went dead immediately. DEAD. I heard a sort of click disturbance like when the battery isnt connect properly. But I checked and rechecked all the connections and fuses. All seems ok. Now I dont know where to check anymore. I never have problems with bike. 😣

Can anyone guide what to do/check/test from here? Did I damage something in the jump? Is it ECU??? Rectifier? Should I have let the battery charge more bwfore I pressed starter button?

Ill appreciate any wisdom.

Thanks

If I understand you correctly the bike has been left in sub zero temperatures, outside. When charged it lights up the display etc BUT has not got enough amperage to start it.
Connect it to a car battery and still nothing..

How old is the battery?..it may take a charge BUT not have enough amps to be able to turn the engine over..

Hi Nikroc

It was left outside but not subzero temp but 3-6 deg Celsius on the coldest nights.

The battery is about 6 years old. Never gave me any problems. On its own nothing switched on. No dash, lights or anything. As if no battery at all.

When I connected bike to car battery everything switched on. But when I pressed start button to turn the engine, everything shut dead as if no battery at all. No battery does anything to bike now. Completely dead and stays dead with both batteries.

personally id recheck aii the fuses, maybe even replace them...as for the battery....at 6 years old,and 50 id consider replacing it...

I certainly hope it is just the battery and nothing more serious. I really cant afford a $500 problem right now. Someone is coming to check the bike tomorrow. Nervy wait...

Someone as in a mechanic?..knowledgable friend?..

xtmax 08-07-17 02:00

Yep, repairs and sells bikes. Comes highly recommended by a friend. We shall see. I dont want to buy a new battery for nothing. Im wondering if something might be wrong with the starter relay? Both fuses are fine though.

nikroc 08-07-17 09:37

i thought you said you had no electrics whatsoever?..no lights on the dash etc so i would have thought that means you got nothing going to the starter motor etc.

have you considered doing a deep charge/using an optimiser type battery charger?..does your battery hold any charge?..

I push ''started'' the bike and at least dash lights came on. Even tachometer ticked over! But nothing else worked.

Highly recommended mechanic didnt show. Apparently had own car trouble.

Do yourself a favour and get a multimeter across the battery..see what kinda volts it has when standing doing nothing and if you can when trying to turn the engine over..

you could try shorting the starter motor terminals with an insulated screwdriver..if you suspect the fault is the starter motor.

Sparkes a lot tho!!!

you could even post a video of the bikes attempts at starting..

are you 100% sure ALL the fuses are ok?

xtmax 08-07-17 19:08

Nikroc, I tested the battery with the ol metal rod. No spark. Dead. Its recharging now. But youre right, I will go test it at spares shop. But I do now suspect the battery more than anything....I think. Where is the ground wire located?

nikroc 08-07-17 19:22

Forgive me for asking but where are you from?...

Personally i believe your batteries dead. Dead/dying batteries will take a charge and appear to be ok BUT dont have the amps to cold start the bike. Remember these are a big ,relatively heavy single cylinder.

I replaced mine recently for 50 AFTER having similar symptoms are your describing.

Problem solved.

xtmax 08-07-17 22:09

Yes it is the battery. I connected car battery straight onto bike and it lit up like a christmas tree! Engine even turned over. All the bells en whistles work. So relieved! Just thinking about all the potentiaal costs if it where electronic problems makes my head spin. Also if I see another fuse I am going to puke XD.
Im Dutch.Thank you for your help and interest friend!
**Did you buy the Yuasa lead one?

nikroc 08-07-17 22:52

I bought a yuassa one.the best i could afford with a 3 year gaurente..I believe you get what you pay for. Coulda got cheaper but ...
