Sprocket too thin?!

Spent yesterday changing my chain and sprockets. What a palaver that was. Needed an impact wrench in the end as couldn't budge it with a breaker bar.

Nice new DID 520 VX2 chain along with a set of JT sprockets from Wemoto. I have bought the rear JT sprocket from them in the past and had no issues with it. However, I removed the front sprocket (an all metal number from OTR) and put on the new JT 15 tooth sprocket on. This has the rubber bushes on it.

Issue 1
When turning by hand I noticed that the DID clip link was catching the two bolts that hold the oil seal cover plate behind the sprocket.

I measured a part worn Yamaha front sprocket which appears to be 11m thick. When I measured the new JT sprocket it was 10mm thick. I chose these two as they both have the rubber sides. I have temporarily put this old sprocket on for the moment. Unsure whether to try and space this out or look for an alternative sprocket.

Issue 2
Now the bike tends to wail occasionally when under power. Particularly when in fourth gear. It sounds like it is coming from the right hand (throttle side) of the bike. It is s completely silent if I freewheel it or when running the engine in neutral. Not sure what is causing this as was never present before the work.

Any ideas on either of these issues?

Just thinking to myself since I wrote this...

Could it be that there is something up with the split link and that the pins are protruding too far out the back?

How did you press the link plate on before fitting the spring clip...? Steve

the clip..is the retaining clip facing in towards the engine?..should not the pins be facing outwards?...forgive this BUT is the chain too tight?...

Steve - I have a press device to push the side plate on before sliding the clip on with a pair of pliers.

nikroc - The link and clip are correctly fitted on the outside of the chain and in the correct direction.

I looked at the rear of the split link and the pins definitely protrude a bit more than the rest of the chain. I have another brand new split link I can use and see if there is any difference.

With regards to the tightness of the chain - I will intentionally make it a little slack to see if there is any difference as well.

curious to understand how wide the two chains are in comparison..so the links still rubbing with the original sprocket on?..

DUMBASS ALERT :o

Well it would appear that I had the new sprocket the wrong way round!!

I took the old one off and stuck the new one on the other way around and it works fine. No catching of the bolts when I turned it by hand to check. Chain had the correct slack.

I took it out for a spin. No chain noise and no wailing noises. So fingers crossed it is all ok now!

Welcome to the special club.....! I'm a long standing member! . Glad it's sorted. ...I should think the bike is a whole lot nicer to ride now. Steve

We all do it Chris,do you remember at ace cafe you pointed out my front disc?..Guess what,it was the wrong way round!..when I was changing the front tyre in preparation for the ace trip I must have put it on wrong in a hurry!..Glad you got it sorted!.

Replicant 24-04-17 22:07

I had forgotten about the discs.

I also used this to pack out the cush drive with some old inner tube as well as bleed the back brake with some fresh fluid. Just the new back tyre to be ordered tomorrow, sticking with Mitas E07.

It has been a busy few weeks.
