Chain questions
Hi guys
I have a few questions reg the drive chain. mine broke. *What happens to the broken chain? can it be used for spare links? Or must it be thrown away? seems such a waste as I think my broken chain is really still in very good shape. (I had to shorten to 108 in emergency.) *Ok to use o ring links on x ring chain? * PO installed new sprockets and chain and it has about 12000km on. chain broke but sprockets still very good. 👍👍 Should I get an expensive chain now or rather just OEM and change everything when all 3 is worn? *Looking at DID 520vx2 Street chain. is it good for Tenere 660? Thanx alot! |
Hello mate
I use a 520 vx2 on my xt no issues at all. I personally wouldn't keep the chain even for links. |
If your chain broke without warning or excessive wear then I'd put it straight in the bin - all of it! You can't be sure any of the other links/plates aren't going to suffer the same fate.
I's also give the thumbs-up for a DID 520VX2 X-Ring chain; it is about the best, strongest and longest-lasting you can get. |
Thanks for advice.
So let me get this straight: when a chain breaks at all, it must be thrown away? Is the gold or grey DID 520vx2 beter (rust)? |

Some folk like the 'blingy' look of a gold chain, but really it doesn't make a whole heap of difference - It's how you look after it that counts. In any case, a chain that actually still looks gold after it's been on the bike a few miles is more than likely under-lubed. I have a gold DID on mine, but you can't actually tell it's gold at all - the Scottoiler sees to that! |
I would change all 3 at once ie chain and both sprockets. And yes DID is fantastic.
