Dropping tyre pressure
 

What is a safe/practical amount of pressure to drop from a tyre like the Distanzia. .? I often take the short cut home down Chalkpit lane. ..it's a mixture of chalk and flint and lots of loose shingle for the last half mile. All the gullys and washout are no problem...but the loose stuff has the Tenere all over the place! , I've never dropped tyre pressure before so no nothing about it. .....Steve

only time i binned a bike was when i had a very slow puncture and the front wheel didnt want to go round the gentle bend i was riding through!..

Cheers Pepsi, I'll try it in drops of 5....and I'll be pumping them up after before I hit the tarmac. Sorry to be so dumb. ..but I presume you drop pressure on both wheels. ..? (Feel free to laugh! ) Steve

In addition to Pepsi's advice it is worth noting that quite often there is absolutely no benefit at all in running lower pressures in more road-orientated dual sport tyres (like the Distanzia/TrailRider) because they are designed with a stiff carcass and sidewall. They just don't have enough flexibility in them to compress/deform and follow the contours of the surface when aired down. In fact stiffer walled tyres are often more prone to pinch punctures, cuts and nicks when run at low pressures on rocks and gravel. To benefit from low pressures you really need to have a flexible tyre that's designed to deform in such conditions.

I think you'll have to suck it and see. Don't go too low as Pepsi suggests and don't expect a miracle in terms of improved grip and traction - it may end up worse! ;)

For a half mile? It is not worth, I think. If you think that this is important or just for getting "feel", try 1.7 bars. Not more. At least I wouldn't with my R.

I'll experiment and let you know! , I'm afraid as most of my riding is on what I call 'grey' lanes, with occasional 'proper' off roading I'm sticking with the Distanzia's...unless there really is a more off road tyre out there with the same level of grip in the wet! You can peel into any corner , even when it's chucking it down with total confidence. Steve

I keep same pressure, tar and gravel, all the years, no problem, adjust speed according to road conditions
