Greetings from South Africa everyone! I am a new XT660x owner and found this wonderful site when doing some "homework" about the bike.
Great load of info here! I am not new to bikes, been riding 20+ years, some superbikes, raced MX/enduro for many years. I have a few bikes still but added the XT to the stable as I wanted a "fun" bike for the odd bit of commuting and weekend runs. The funny thing is when I tested the XT(bought from a friend) I was not overly impressed with the performance(coming off superbikes and 450mx bikes) BUT I absolutely LOVED the gearbox/brakes/clutch..it just felt so user friendly I bought the bike.
Also the good news was that I hear the performance can be improved upon from standard(which mine is) sooo....some small mods to come..hehe..

A few fairly inexpensive tweaks and additions here and there and you'll soon have the performance to match the rest of the bike. They're a bit "strangled" by emissions regulations straight out of the crate.
