Stripped threads oil filter cover, would like some help!
 
Okay, so today while changing my oil I used a torque wrench to tighten the oil filter cover bolts (why the f*ck did I do that??) and stripped the thread that the short one bolts to, not completely though it's still tight enough for me not to be able to screw it off by hand.

Thinking of getting a longer bolt if there are threads that are still intact at the end? Anyone know if this is possible? I will fix this properly at the next oil change. As I understand the bolt is and m6 x 40mm , would a 50mm and a couple of washers and a little blue loctite be fine temporarily, it wouldn't block the oil flow or something like that?

Hi mate
The dreaded torque wrench. I did the same thing about 6 years ago on a 600 bandit sump nut, never again. You may not believe this I put some plumbers PFTE tape around the sump bolt till I got a new sump plate. In the end I had the bike 2 years and 4 oil changes later and I kept using the tape and said to my self I will do it next time lol. I only changed the sump when I sold the bike. Maybe a quick fix for now.

i did this with the bottom one of the three be very careful as i tapped mine out to the next size and then pumped it full of wd to wash the swarf back out the hole .... the wd dint fill the hole up instead it pumped all the swarf into the casing and it had to take it off to make sure there was no harmful swarf in my motor i thought it was a blank hole but turns out it wasnt

If you want a permanent fix (recommended), go to your nearest bearing supplier or engineering supplies shop and get a HeliCoil kit to suit.

If you are not confident enough to do the job yourself, ask if they can recommend somebody who can.

It is an easy enough job to do. First lay the bike on it side. Remove the cover. Fill the oil filter housing with a rag to prevent swarf entering. Drill out the damaged thread with correct sized drill (should be included in the kit) ensuring drill is straight and true. Tap the hole out with Helicoid tap. Take your time and make sure tap is square and starts correctly.

Insert the Helicoi with the tool provided and break off the tag.

You should now be good to go, and have enough Helicoil inserts left over to do further thread repairs if necessary.

just run a 1/4" UNC down the hole...
is .4 bigger thah 6mm..
and yer have to use a 1/4" UNC bolt then....
