Things so far

Got some Barkbusters & centre stand fitted on today. Happy with progress to date.
I must be getting old or something but I never thought I would get excited over a centre stand. Chain , swing arm and numerous other jobs just got a whole lot easier, plus taking the weight of the bike off the suspension when not in use. I went for the Yamaha one as it has got a lot of thumbs up in previous posts.
So up to now the Ten has been fitted with :-

Kev fuel & O2 controller,
Twist grip mod,
Cush Drive rubber mod, (still rock solid )
Akropovic exhaust,
Pivot pegz
Altech Explorer rack, Rad Guard & Sprocket cover,
USB Charger,
Gammatronix Volt meter,
Shorty Levers,
Barkbusters,
Centre stand,
And of course a Head light protector all the way from Norfolk. Thanks heaps Pleiades
Dialectic grease throughout,
Wiring loom protected where needed,
Swing arm & Head bearings greased.

So all being well the bike should be good for a while.

The only other thing I'd like to get sorted in the not to distant future is some Spot lights.
If anyone else is going to fit Barkbusters that hasn't already then I would recommend having a ball end Allen key handy (5mm I think it was) to aid fitting as the bar clamp bolts are half under the cross brace on the handlebars. Cheers for now.

Oh yeah forgot to mention while researching centre stands in previous threads that some peoples rubber bungs have fallen off so I squirted some liquid nails on the back of them so perhaps will hang on a bit longer. We'll see.

The lights I've been looking at are from Poland & have been used in Dakar Rallies. They can be wired to operate as daytime running lights as well as full strength on high beam. There is a tidy little light bar too.

Bike looks great....and I bet the centre stand is a blessing at times. I think I've put off getting one as it's ingrained in my mind that they were always the first thing you unbolt ed from your bike, in the 'olden' days! . Another mod on my to do list!. I like the spec and look of the spotlights in the link you posted, be interested to know if you go for them. Going back to the centre stand, another reason for having one is on ferry crossings. ..it's quite harsh on the seat and suspension when they strap the bike down and it's on a sidestand. You've modded your bike into a mighty fine Tenere, Desert Racer! Steve

Looking awesome desert racer!..the bar busters are a must!..it's a shame we can't get our two white ones together, think they may look like twins!..I'm seriously considering a centre stand , my only issue is ground clearance, how much does it reduce it by?..cheers jo..

That is one thing i know about :-)

During the warm half of the year i take the mootorcycle with a 1 hour ferry across Kattegat twice a week.

http://worldmaritimenews.com/wp-cont...-Catamaran.jpg

Usually the sea is calm but sometimes it shows it teeth.

Even when i had a center stand i always used the side stand so that the suspension could take some of the punisment.

On the pony I just use two straps from the rear pegs to the flow. The one opposite the sidestand first so that it compresses the suspension a bit and then the sidestand side to make sure that it wont be able to raise enough that it could get of the sidestand (used to have a bike with a spring loaded sidestand)

I just use a pair of simple tie-downs
http://www.fc-moto.de/Acerbis-Big-Tie-Downs-35mm

They are much easier to use than the cheap racket ones that are provided (and too cheap because of theft) and I've done so since 2002 with 4 different motorcycles. Their newest and biggest ferries are much more stable in rough see than the one i used the first ~5 years.

Desert Racer 15-01-16 09:29

Thanks fellas, the stand I suppose is about an inch or so lower than the suspension linkage. While the feet are up next to the swing arm.
At least it might stop you sinking into mud to far if you happen to get yourself stuck in the stuff eh Jo? ;-) & yeah would be great to park the bikes up together.
They are no wider than the folded up foot pegs. & if you do find yourself in some deep narrow ruts then you would probably hit the main foot pegs first.
Some dodgy photos but gives you an idea...

Right at the end of that polish link it says the Supermini is NOT recommended for motorcycles?

coleman.nz 16-01-16 05:42

Hi Desert Racer

How do you find the buzz on the bars, as I see you have got quite a bit of weight on the ends?

I have a Fatbar with solid OTR Bushes, that has a bit of buzz - would be nice to have less.

I never saw that? But there are a lot of pictures in there gallery of bikes fitted with them, I suppose its just the small print get out clause. Just like my Akrapovic pipes & Headlight protector say "Not for road use" when they are designed for a road specific bike.

Incidentally those Superminis are also avaliable on the Holan website a bit cheaper, but don't have the paypal option. I think Greatescape bought a rack from the Holan site but had a few problems with them.

Hand guards just used to be one piece of plastic that bolted on the brake & clutch bolt. Now they are broken up into Hardware fitting kit, which comes with a small weight that fits between the grip metal bar, then choose the plastic guard. Then you can have the 'additional' bar end weights on the outside.for another AU$50. They don't look much but do have a bit of weight to them, I found there was no more vibration at the grips than with the original bar end weights.
You can if you wish add 'Skid plates' to the outer edges, a bit more protection for the already installed protectors.

jo75 16-01-16 08:55

Definitely worth thinking about that centrestand, your pictures are good mate!..I'm putting the getting stuck business down to it being proberly the wettest day of the year and having 50/50 tyres on!.so I'm trying to forget that!..😉😉😉😉

Desert Racer 28-06-16 02:47

Well a lot of deliberation I finally took the plunge & ordered a couple of 4xled supermini lights after a few emails going to & fro as the web site is set up for European delivery service. Fingers crossed.

greatescape 28-06-16 20:08

I'll be interested to see those Desert Racer, I'm looking for a pair of lights to fit where my front indicators were. Steve

Desert Racer 26-07-16 02:57

The 4xled spotties arrived in one piece from Poland, phew. Really nice people to deal with. I used Paypal in the transaction as a bit of security if anything went belly up. They do look a quality bit of kit and where very well packaged. They also do a mini light bar which I believe would hang down from the headlight framing still clearing the tow ring quite easily. The light bar would be less wiring but I wasn't keen on the mustache look myself. I did consider at one point the idea of the light bar mounted on the Satnav bar and cutting a hole through the screen.
I used an Adventure Spec bracket purchased from a fellow member to mount the lights. Flipping it upside down & using some longer M6 50mm bolts ( although 40mm would work ), an M6 coupler, nut & washers has managed to position the lights nicely. I haven't wired them in yet but have tried them straight off the the battery and would certainly appear to be plenty bright enough for my needs.

Desert Racer

Do you happen to have some lights on / lights off night photos ?
Do they have a clear lens cover across the LED's ?

Hi mate, been a bit flat out only just found your post sorry bud, have a look at

http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?...ighlight=4XLED

for some photos of the lights on.
And yes there is a clear lens that covers all 3 of the individual LED's

Desert Racer 12-10-16 05:27

I sent my forks to Sydney to be reworked by Teknik, & have returned with new stickers on them that match the bike & a new friend which is nice.
Front ends back together, got up early this morning & removed the rear shock. Luckily removing the left rear foot peg meant I could take the Akra's off without striping anything else off the rear end to get the shock out. The old one was out in half an hour. The top bolt had the nut on the air box side so I didn't have to drill a hole in the air box like UKBri had to. Phew.
Now just been told my daughter has a concert at school tonight. So it will have to be another early morning start to get the Ohlins in followed with test ride. ;-)

Looking good Desert Racer. ....looking forward to hearing about your thoughts on the new set up, going to be good I reckon! Steve

Desert Racer 13-10-16 02:18

After a short spin there is a very noticeable difference. My initial reaction was it is much firmer, but I think what's actually happening is that the suspension is now doing what it's supposed to. Riding along doesn't feel like much is happening but a shadow of the front wheel on the ground shows it soaking up the bumps while all is calm & comfortable at the handlebars. Sweet. The bike has lost its wallowing waterbed feeling in stock trim. Front wheel dive under braking has gone, great when sharp cornering at the bottom of hills. The rear end also has a firmer feeling without losing comfort, now doesn't squat down under acceleration. So far so good. In all honesty the Yagaur shock would of probably been more than adequate for my less than professional riding skill, but damn that Ohlins looks good. I've got the settings on the soft side at the moment to help things bed in a bit before I start tying myself in knots with compression & rebound damping etc.

Mr Pepsi, just use the front brakes & drop a gear to use the engine to slow you down.

I also have a thing for shiny exhausts so gave the pipe a buff up again while I had access to all areas.

greatescape 13-10-16 09:20

Sounds like a good result Desert Racer, the much improved 'feeling ' your getting from the new set up is so nice. ..I had a taste of it the other day when I rode the XR. Knowing the suspension is working well underneath you and not just sagging along! By the time you have fine tuned things it will be awesome! And Pepsi. ...I now have a disturbing image in my mind as I head off to work! Steve

Desert Racer 13-10-16 11:50

I suppose in a nut shell it's more like a long travel sports bike feel now. We'll see how it goes with a few k's on it.

Pepsi, Pepsi, Pepsi, I think you may need to pop down to the village for a spell as the thin air up in the mountains are giving you halousansions.

greatescape 13-10-16 19:24

http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...psuwi2e7ii.png I'd always imagined you looking like this Pepsi. .....but the wincyette looks more practical! ! Steve

Desert Racer 13-10-16 23:38

:wtfk::wow::hahaha[1]: Pepsi, I hope you picked up one of those nice tartan pull along shopping bags to complete the look mate. What happens in the mountain stays in the mountain.

And Steve if you bump into your friend Niki again, tell her to ditch the pink & shoes & stick with the leather. I'm thinking just for her own safety on the bike that's all!!

greatescape 14-10-16 00:08

Will do Ken!, ....but seriously. ..will be following your suspension reports with interest so keep us posted!. Steve

That's exactly the same reason why I ended up buying a Yacugar! ;)

That collector is impressively shiny. Shows real dedication when a man is prepared to buff up something that no one will ever see once the covers are back! :023:

Desert Racer 15-10-16 09:46

Cheers Pleiades, I just like to make things last as long as possible.

I went for the Ohlins in the end as Teknik's Tenere set up was ( and believe still is ) on special. I had a look on an Ohlins website and the Tenere shock was on sale there to. So it could be that Ohlins are discontinuing that shock as the Tenere is being phased out?
