Sorry...a gearing question
Hi folks, just come back from a 2500 mile trip to northern Spain and France, which was great, but it's left me thinking about the standard gearing. There are numerous threads confirming that it's on the high side (2014 xtz btw) and various suggestions, including the gear commander website calculator which I've been messing with. Anyway, I'm an on road rider so wondered if anyone had installed a 47 or bigger rear sprocket and whether this had worked out ok, I.e what happened and how did it ride. Thanks for any feedback.

I changed the gearing to 15/48 before a long overland haul - and it just felt much more right compared to the original gearing. First gear was a little low, but else it was very good.
Rode two sets of chain and sprocket on that gearing - each around 30 k kms. Now I have changed to 15/47 and have been riding 2500 kms on it but doesnt feel as good as 15-48. More clutching in junctions and at low speed. But maybe it needs more time to get used to... Anyhow - gearing depends on what kinda riding you do and of course what you personal feel is right.... |
I run 14/48 most of the time
but go to 15/48 if i'm doing a long trip.. at 100kmph.. "60mph" 15/45 = 4000rpm "standard" 15/48 = 4250rpm 14/48 = 4500rpm .. |
