Ohlins shock setup
 
Hello folks, i'm in need of a bit of advice/tips on setting up the Ohlins rear shock.

I've just bought and fitted Ohlins fork springs and oil and an Ohlins rear shock but before I go out to ride I wanted to set up the sag settings correctly, i'll tinker with compression and rebound later when i'm out on the road.

Using the data sheet provided with the shock it advises setting the sag to the following specs:

Recommended Sag and Ride Height
Free sag (R1-R2), (F1-F2)
Ride height (R1-R3), (F1-F3)

F1 - F2: 40-50 mm
F1 - F3: 55-65 mm

R1 - R2= 15-25 mm
R1 - R3= 40-50 mm

So far i'm not getting close to the free sag settings for the rear, currently at about 32mm. For those of you that have fitted one how far have you had to wind the spring preload down to achieve the 15-25mm window?

Hi mate, i too had a bit of trouble getting the static sag set to the recomendations on the Ohlins instructions. I ended up using my projection kit to raise the rear 25mm. This seems to reduce the leverage of the swing arm. Then i only had to wind on the preload 3mm.

Before i raised it, I had wound the preload down nearly 10mm and was just getting near the 15mm static sag.

I hope you get it sorted. I really beat on my shock hard, i tour i tow i trail ride and it takes the licks no problem, its incredible. Worth every penny. Complements the WP exceptionally well.

Thanks for that, I fear that if I added and extra 25mm with raising links i'd have to take a running leap to get on the bike, I have a Kahedo seat on which is a much higher seat than the standard. I may have to keep winding more preload on then and see how close I can get to the recommended setting, takes forever to wind the bloody rings down too.

what springs did you order with the shock...
what model is the shock ?.... 46DR1 ???

those sag number look more like road bike settings than dirt...

you should be aiming for numbers around...
35mm Static sag..
33% of suspension travel rider sag... ( includes static sag)

I got the shock with the piggyback reservoir from OTR ordered to my weight including gear. The shock is S46PR1C1 YA817 with spring 01099-24/80 L3314 fitted.

I did wonder if the Ohlins settings were a bit on the stiff side because as you said working to the 1/3rd rule of thumb the the rider sag should be in the region of 67mm and not 40 - 50mm. I think i'll aim to set the whole preload front and rear to the rider weight of 1/3rd of the travel and see how it feels from there, it's going to feel a million times better than the tired stock springs and shock anyway.

Ok so I set the rear to 33% of available travel with me sat on the bike went out for a ride and felt great..... however the front is hard as hell and i'm struggling to reduce the sag, even with the preload backed right off i'm only getting 55mm of sag on the forks with me on the bike.

The front springs are Ohlins code 08716-60 (36.5/590/6.0)
I also got with it Ohlins fork oil which is code 01313-02 with viscosity of 23 cST at 40 degrees C

Installed using the original spacer and 145mm air gap as per the manual, so don't know what's a miss here, could it be the oil?

I thought this would be straight forward...:icon_scratch:

The Ohlins fork springs are 593mm long (even though they say 590 on the box!) and when fitted XTZ require a 40mm spacer which should have been supplied in the box?

The XTZ's OE springs are 583mm and have a 50mm spacer fitted as standard, which makes the overall length 633mm. You need a 40mm spacer. With the OE spacers fitted you are running an extra 10mm or preload up front without realising it. This is why you're having trouble getting the front sag correct.

If you didn't get any 40mm spacers supplied from Ohlins, then just cut down the originals by 10mm.

Thanks Pleiades, that does make a lot of sense now, no new spacer was supplied in the box, bit naughty of them.

I'll take the forks out and cut the spacers down and fingers crossed i'll be ready to rock!

Does anyone sell different sized spacers, just in case I **** it up?

They're easy enough to make up from steel, aluminium or acetal tube for a few pence. Replacement spacers from Yamaha are quite pricey at �15 each!
