Hi guys, on my recent trip to Scotland we got caught up in some.really heavy rain, and my bike (2009 non abs tenere 31000 miles) started to run rough and missfire something rotten. Its used all year round for an average of 250 miles A week.

The misfire happens only when ive been on a steady throttle for around 30 seconds. And its usually between 3-4000 rpm. And only when wet. After yesterdays rain it started again it runs very well when dry.

Bike is fitted with both kev mods dna filter snorkel removed and open leo vince exhaust. Its been set up this way for 2 years and no problems with rain or river crossings.

My first thought was coil/ht lead joint So i blasted with WD at the roadside. Seemed to do the trick for maybe 10mins. But it got me wandering as too why it only happens on a.steady throttle. Ive whipped off the TP SENSOR and have checked the resistance as stated in the haynes book of lies, It climbs very linear. But reaches a maximum of 2.48 k ohms.when the book says it should 0-6 kohms mine is only 0-2.48

The max resistance in hanynes says 4-6
Mine is only 2.48
Could this be the cause? Are the values in haynes correct?

If i hold at say 65 on motorway if feels gutless and revs drop and it starts to miss, give it a handful and its off like a scalded cat.

All connectors and clean and dry inc reg/rec and tps. Coil is off to be waterproofed.

Any help and suggestions would be most.appreciated.

Max resistance when measured accross blue and black blue wire.

Thanks Jon

I've had 2 wet misfires I thought the first was the coil ...... it wasn't ot was the ht lead joint and the 2nd was whenever it got wet or I washed it it would miss and buck at 3000 rpm I even posted the video on youtube under my name of Marvy finger bottom ....... turned out it was the map sensor under the edge of the tank if I put my finger over or crimp the pipe it stopped the miss firing

Jon, sorry, been away getting married.
My problem came back.
Now I had replaced the TPS and the OE TPS was out of spec. I checked the replacement TPS and it was in spec.
MAP sensor under the tank was in spec.
IAT sensor was in spec.
I replaced the O2 (lambda sensor) and problem remained.
In the end I removed the O2 sensor, fitted a bung and a loop for the plug and the bike has been running fine since.

Electrex do a coil that is in size spec, but the primary resistance is different (lower) than the listed Haynes value.

Cheers for the reply Tom :-) congratulations on getting married.

I managed to pick up a used coil from a 04 660x 20. Soon as it landed i did the resistance test and it was bang in spec so i waterproofed it and stuck it. On. Bikes been fine doing the jetwash test. (piss everything through and go ride)

The suspect coil has been off a few days now in the house and is still giving erratic readings on the secondary winding. So i think i may have sorted it.
Im out laning tomorrow ill let you know how i get on.

Many thanks for everyones help it has been invaluable.

Ride safe
Jon

Good news - A simple and cheap fix in the end. Fingers crossed it stays fixed for you!

Good to hear, Jon

Just too round things off. I went laning Sunday, which turned out too be a sunny day. So plenty of fords and deep puddles where traversed to simulate a wet ride. (including throwing handfulls of dirty water at the coil haha)

I have yet too make the problem repeat. :-) as a bonus the bike also pulls miles better from 2000 rpm and idles much more steadily :-D
The suspect coil is still giving erratic readings on the secondary winding so is going in the bin.

Wooohooo thanks again for everyones help and input.

I probably need to change my TPS, so the good part is the 5PS-85885-01 or the 3P6-85885-00 ?
I found the 5PS-85885-01in a good price but i don't know if it is the right part i need.

Any info would be much appreciated!
