Excel rim and tyre size

Hi all, recently acquired an excel rear rim from OTR for my Tenna after the original San Remo decided to go egg shape and wouldn't pull back in. I wanted to match it up to the front excel anyway.

So, after receiving it I realized I'd assumed it would be the same width. OTR have sent me a 2.5 wide rim compared to 2.75 standard.

Besides looking significantly smaller my concern is whether a 140/80/17 tyre will fit this rim. I've always run 130's but they look so skinny I was going to try a 140 next tyre to see what it felt like. I'm hoping it's still possible.

cheers
Brad

P.S. Does anyone know if excel do a larger width excel rim for our Tenna's?

Excel only do a 2.50x17/18, it's the widest they have before a big jump to the supermoto sizes of 3.50+ (which are all way too wide for the Tenere). The stock 2.75 is quite an odd size and isn't all that common from aftermarket suppliers.

A 140 will NOT fit on a 2.50" rim. Even a 130 is pushing it to the limit. The ideal size for a 2.50" is a 120/80, which is the 'normal' choice for off-road riders typically using this size of rim.

Thanks for the info Pleiades, it's disappointing news.
When most riding is done on tar roads and gravel roads a wider rather than narrower rim would be more suitable I feel.
Oh well, one cannot always have what one desires. Cheers

Well actually they do have other sizez Pleiades...

I've looked into the specs of my rear Talon/Excel wheel.
it's a 3.0x17 with 36 spokes.

I run 130/80 by the way

690 and 950se are running 2.50'' rears with 140mm tires from the factory and so are countless rally bikes, why wouldn't it work on Tenere?

Interesting, when I enquired at Talon, OTR and my local wheel builder, they could only source a 2.50 or a 3.50 x17. Which is why I have stuck with the stock rims as much as I'd like a change. Useful info. I'll have a look again...

I'd guess the Tenere is a much much heavier bike and gets used more on the road, for longer distances and loaded up with luggage? This is what happens when you fit a tyre that's too wide for the rim and ride at motorway speeds for any length of time on a heavy bike:

The side walls being pulled in put strain on the edge of the tyre and it can overheat and peel away. Full thread here.

All I'm going on is the recommended sizes of tyres for given rims:

http://www.mtsac.edu/~cliff/storage/...Size_Chart.pdf

The recommended ideal rim for a 140/80 is a 3.50" (but a 2.75 or 3.00 are acceptable).

Rang Excel distributer who tells me they dont do a 3.00x17 36 hole for tenna but they can do blanks in that size. Unfortunately the cost is astronomical. $850 AUS .Price does include paint as they don't do black. (What the...!!)

That sounds pretty much the same as the rather expensive "special order from Japan" responce I got. I didn't even ask about whether it was an un-drilled blank, or about the colours!

Looking at your wheel again, I think it may have been an older used one off another (probably production) bike that was used when your wheel was built. Looking at the rim markings, it says RK Excel. As far as I can remember Excel rims have been marked Takasago for a good few years. They may well have produced a 36 hole black rim once, but maybe not anymore?

Recent Excels are stamped like this:
