The first for hundred miles is always on half revs not too fast as it doesn't matter how much they try your still going to get small amounts of old swarf, metal dust etc.

Thanks guys. I've now got 20w50, and I'm gonna do another oil change around 100 miles with similar. Third change will be around 200 miles for 10w40, then the normal 600 mile service by the dealer. I broke my speed triple in the same way and it didn't burn a single drop of oil in 5000 miles.

Don't forget to change the O ring when you change the oil.

Am I alone in thinking that this is a bit overkill???

Or am I missing something vital about running engines in that manufacturers of said engines do not seem to be concerned about???

Indeed, 4 of each. I do not run mine in the way the manufacturers say. I do short runs just beyond peak torque with plenty of compression braking for the first 20 miles before the first oil change. If you remember, the handbook only says to "avoid PROLONGED operation above 4500rpm" ... Read into that as you may. Peak torque being around 5500rpm.
