Question pretty please...
So the day finally arrived. I took delivery of the Tenere in race blu today. Sod's law, the weather was having a schizophrenic episode, so breaking in and first oil change was a bit of a mission.
My question is: Is the oil filter meant to by that noisy? It makes a bit of a racket. I did follow the book and filled in 1.9L, warmed up and filled in the remaining up to 2.6L Thanks, DukeNinja |

the oil filter should make NO noise what so ever... |
Question pretty please...
Does the oil level read Ok on the dipstick ?
|
Yes it reads fine. Should I try and get hold of an OEM filter and do another change?
|
If the filter housing is making a buzzing, or fast tapping sound (like when dodgy domestic plumbing makes noises), then there may well be a restriction, or more likely an air-lock in the housing.
Try first bleeding the oil pump housing by loosening the small bolt on the top half a turn or so with the engine running. Make sure oil flows out. If that doesn't cure it, the take the filter out and replace. You may well have inadvertently let one of the rubber sealing rings slip and/or get trapped between filter and crankcase causing a restriction in flow. Of course if you used a cheap pattern filter, that in itself could be the problem? |
Thanks Pleiades, that sounds like a better explanation. I'm away from the bike until tomorrow, but what I'll probably do is get hold of an OEM filter today and change it first Hong tomorrow. Is there any way of just replacing the filter without draining the while system?
Thanks again. |
Not sure if tenere filters have a bypass but I know for sure genuine yamahaa filters for my WR had a bypass valve . in the event of severe blockage the bypass allowed some oil flow to engine. Maybee bypass is chattering as filter blocked during breakin ??

That's exactly what I thought about doing. My garage opens up on a grassy lane, so I might just go ahead and do it. I've just taken a trip to my local dealer and got some filters/oil and bought the centre stand too. Guess what I'll be doing tomorrow! There is only the small ring gasket at the bottom of the filter cover and the other bigger one one the inside of the cover AFAIK, and I'm sure I checked they were in place before I closed the cover.

I just did my oil too. Did you remember to remove both the engine oil drain plug as well as the front frame drain screw. Quite a lot of old oil comes out from the second one. Be carefull as too much oil (ie over the max mark on the dipstick) is as bad as too little oil. I also found the level quite a bit higher when the bike has been idling for a minute or 2 compared to cold oil

Thanks for the help so far guys. I did remove both draining bolts. So I get home today and start the bike up (after checking oil level and any leaks) and the noise has disappeared completely....
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/o...psfrzcza3s.jpg On another note, I decided to fiddle with her and installed the centre stand, optimate charge cable, h&b bash plate and a denali powerhub 2, http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/o...psxpkjj3ua.jpg and just as I was finishing the jobs, guess what I see: dents on the frame! On a brand new bike as well. So disheartening. http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/o...pszjdvwvxs.jpg Any suggestions as to how I can sorry this out? I've taken pics and sent an email to the dealer. Will probably call him as well first thing tomorrow. |

As for the dents, it's a shame and I can understand why you'd be upset, but they all seem to have something not quite right about them! Mine has a patch of splatter from the weld just below where your dents are. I thought it was bad when I noticed it, but it's all but forgotten now amongst the other scratches and dings here and there. Think of your dents as a birth mark, like my chicken sh!t welding, a little genetic abnormality that makes your bike a little bit different. ;) Nice bike BTW. |
That's a good way of putting it! I have logged in my concern with the dealer, who has passed it on to Yamaha UK. I know i've only just got the beastie, but I'd hate these dent to be the bike's downfall should I sell it on in the future and they get in the way of the sale.
