I have got through 2 headlight bulbs in as many weeks trying to work out if it's the bulbs or the bike

Cheers in advance

Could be the bulbs (some cheap ones out there are rubbish), or it could just be coincidence? I would perhaps check the charging voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running to verify the voltage regulator is doing its stuff and you aren't suffering from over voltage...

Sometimes a poor earth causes bulbs to blow.

That is typical of a gas leak. The bulb wasn't sealed properly (or the quartz glass was faulty) during manufacture. The inert gas pressure inside the bulb is reduced and the halogen cycle can't work properly, and instead of the tungsten filament regenerating, it slowly deposits itself on the inside of the glass (the milky appearance) until there's no more filament left.
