Engine Heat

Hi, I hope someone can help me with this, my Tenere's engine generate a lot of heat and it can be quite uncomfortable.
How have you dealt with this issue?
Thanks,
Fernando

fridolin 26-03-15 21:02

Hi Fernando,
when does it produce to much heat? I own mine for almost seven years and no issues with heat.

Cheers,
Marcus

Mine feels a bit warm around the seat & under the legs here in the Sunshine State of Queensland.
I found the Akrapovic pipes a bit cooler than the original exhaust. I'm going to see the exhaust workshop soon about removing the cat's from them as other people have said it helps a lot with the original exhaust heat wise.
Failing that it may be worth you considering an after market pipe that doesn't have cat's in.

I have aftermarket leo vince pipes, heat wrap around the headers and further along, a heat shield larger than the original, and a temp gauge which tells me everything is normal and I still get my left leg toasted. Mid winter here on the far north coast NSW Australia is comfortable. Other than that it's a PITA!!

Don't have this problem with my ten. Where is the heat released?

Schnidely 27-03-15 11:39

If I knew I would attend the problem. Obviously coming from the engine but how and why is not obvious.

It produces it all the time, it comes from the engine, through the initial part of the exhaust, basically my left leg gets pretty hot!
Thought it was an issue in all Teneres. My exhaust has been "de-catted" but the problem still persists.
Saludos,
Fernando

Thanks, Desert Racer, my original exhaust has already been decatted but the problem is still there...
saludos!

Sorry Fernando, I have no idea then . My Tenere doesn't have the heat issue, definitly.

I'm sure all XTZs produce the same amount of waste heat per unit of energy used for a given state of tune, there is no logical reason why they shouldn't (unless something is badly wrong of course). The heat from the headers and collector is not dissipated well on off-road bikes because they are tucked in close to the engine (good for ground clearance). This considerably reduces air-flow. Not good for cooling. The plastic lower covers don't help either.

No one ever complains about the X/R because the headers hang out in the wind and are effectively air-cooled. However, as soon as folk fit high level 2-1 systems (Metal Mule/OTR etc) they start complaining of an excessively right leg for the same reasons as some Z riders get hot left legs. (Plus obviously the fact that the pipes are closer to your leg!)

It is down to the design of the exhaust system and it's routing - it's a compromise. As it's an off-road orientated bike, the designers have to work round what's best for styling, ergonomics, ground clearance, gas flow and cooling. Something has to come at the bottom of the list of priorities!

The determining factor with people who complain seems to be ambient temperature, and I'm sure you just coming to the end of a long very hot summer in Chile. In the UK and northern Europe nobody ever complains about it. It would appear that riding in temperatures in excess of 25C the headers just don't get enough air flowing round them, and what there is relatively hot. The temperature differential between the ambient air and the surface of the pipework is too small to allow heat to dissipate. In the northern Europe the air is cold enough all year round for the it's cooling effect on the exhaust to be sufficient.

Also remember in hot climates the fan is going to operate a lot more often and that will blow even more hot air over your left leg!

Pleiades thanks for the explanation! Should exhaust wrap help in some way or isn't a good idea to use it?
Saludos,
Fernando

Exhaust wrap isn't going to cure the problem as such, but it may fix some of the symptoms (by insulating your leg from some of the heat). IMO wrap looks "cool" when it first goes on, but soon starts to look grotty and is difficult to remove if you change your mind, but if the heat really is annoying you, then by all means give it a go. You won't do any harm.

Not only the Tenere. My brother sold his 3 month old KTM 1190 because the seat got so hot that he couldn't do more than an hour, and the thin seat didn't help. Dealer had no answer. It is in South Africa though, so already hot to start with.

66T 31-03-15 05:32

My Tenere is fine up to about the low 30s (degC). After that, the heat intensity on both legs increases with ambient temps. Mid 40s is just plain bad in the pain department. Just a design thing, but sure is uncomfortable.

Its the cat in the silencer, live with it or cut it out.Thats how the system works.:newspaper:

Schnidely 31-03-15 11:52

Mort
I have no cat and major heat issue. As 66T says...just a design thing. Unfortunately where I live it's warm or hot most of the year. Just biding my time til something better hits the market.

Thanks Pleiades!
