Bike running too rich
I think my bike is running too rich (soot on exhaust, engine better without air filter, smells of fuel). Can someone point me to a thread on how to increase the O2 on the Ten? i know there is many on the topic here but which one? Thanks.

Anyhow, you can't change it on the Tenere unless you buy (or borrow) one of these... https://blognyamitra.files.wordpress...ostic-tool.jpg |
Thanks Pleiades.
So if I get one of the diag tools it wont make any difference?? So how do I get the bike leaner properly? Can I adjust the fuel somehow? Kevs fuel mod will only make the bike richer. |
Dead crow in the airbox maybe? Has fuel consumption gone up recently? Did you do anything mad when you repacked the exhaust?
|
Fuel injected bikes are all new to me, but I thought other than Kev's magic boxes that the ECU pretty much controlled the fuel / air mix to the prevailing condition's.
I've been looking at different air filters for Tenere's & some are designed to be 'washed & cleaned' with petrol. Perhaps yours is one hence the smell? My exhaust also has soot in the end if that's any consolation. |
Nope, stage 1 DNA filter. I blocked off the crankcase breather hose to see if the colder, fresher air improves air mixture but havent taken it for a spin yet. Will see. The fuel consumption has been heavyish for a while. 18km/l. Checked the sparkplug today and yep, black. How make it leaner?? :-(

Sorry mate but sounds like things are getting beyond the realms of my knowledge with these motors for the time being.
Maybe posting some more info, mileage, age, history, mods from standard, I'm sure the more clued up members of this community will be able to shed some light on the subject. The spark plug on mine is black on the outer edge, darkish grey tip, & white insulator. Is your plug completely black all over? I hope it's a simple fix for you like your air filter was. Fingers crossed. |

Yes mine looks like yours. Surely there must be a way to adjust it manually to run leaner. |
The CO adjustment only adjusts the A/F ratio up to a TPS value of 18, approx 1 to 2% of throttle opening, after that the fuel injection runs on a map & ignores the CO adjustment.
What pipes are you running STD with Kat or open pipes no Kat? |
Hey Kev,
Yes, stage 2 with single MTC can. No cat obviously. |

Btw, the engine breather hose block seems to work. Gives a bit more air and throttle response.

On the Tenere you need option (2). Plug on the diagnostic tool looks like this... http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...psanif1x5l.jpg The port on the bike is covered with a blank female connector which looks like this... http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...pslkzoma9y.jpg Take the blank off and you will see the male connector which plugs into the diagnostic units female plug... http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...psvafhsdn1.jpg If you weren't supplied with the triangular connector then you will need to fabricate something to allow the green wire to connect to the terminal for green on the bike's diagnostic port connector. You can connect the crocodile clips direct to the battery. BE CAREFUL THOUGH - Any miss-connection or reverse of polarity could result in ECU damage! Using the proper triangular plug will prevent any such problems as it only goes on one way. |

When connected in the normal mode (diagnostic tool connect, no buttons pressed and engine running), does the display show rpm and coolant temperature? Can you actually open the diagnostic mode (holding the mode button in and switching ignition on) and perform any of the diagnostic tests, or is it just the CO1 that doesn't work? Does the triangular plug have three wires going to it (red, black and green)? A photo would be really helpful in this instance if you can get one... |
Yes, I can read rpm & coolant temp, but the display flickers...The only other thing it can do is open the co1 and scroll through 1 to 4 and back to one.
There are no other selectable options, and it says " M adjust" in co1-4 it comes up with "CX127" or if I don't hold the mode button down when turning the key back on it reads CO 1.0 but will not respond to adjustments...I want to check my sensors in real time as well. I have been using the yamaha repair manual as reference...I am going to Yamaha today to use their tool, and will let you know what happens. Thanks, Glen. |
Well, I teed it up with the head mechanic at Yamaha, to check co for me, but when I got there the service manager changed his mind, and wanted me to come back in two or three days.
They would not sell me a FI tool either, have to be a Yamaha dealer. BE WARNED the RACEAUTO tool from China sold on D.H.Gate and Alibarba DOES NOT WORK on all Yamaha's as described, it is a scam, and they will not help. This one http://www.raceauto.net/english/news_view.asp?id=15 and they sent me a virus when I complained. |
