My XT Died....

Hey there,
I've been having a few issues with my XTz.
For acouple of months, occasionally, when I stop the engine cuts out, when riding along it misses, a momentary hiccup...When I told my dealer about the problems i was told Yamamha wouldn't do anything about it because they couldn't reproduce the snag.
Then, last week, riding along the A303 while overtaking a lorry, she died completely... I called the Yamaha breakdown service, which happens to be the RAC, who sent out someone who knows about bikes, (he used to ride dirt bikes as a kid). So after waiting 2 1/2 hours I finally got to warm up in the cab of a recover vehicle.
I took my bike to the dealer on the Monday. they gave me a loaner (NC750), and told me they'd be in touch... by the Tuesday evening I rang them to be told that they "think" it's the injector...Think?
Does anyone have any experience of a similar problem? When I switch the ignition on, sometimes the Engine Management light flashes on and off, usually it doesn't. It's covered 7500 miles...
Is it the injector?!!!
Best wishes...

Sounds to me like it may well be that the injector wiring has an intermittent short or open circuit. It is a reasonably well documented problem on the XTZ.

Where the spur for the injector branches off the main loom it is unsheathed and is tight up against the right hand frame rail. Eventually is can rub through and cause the injector to short to earth causing non-starting, miss-fires etc. When it's shorted the engine trouble light will be on, when its OK it won't.

Take a look at this photo. The yellow ring shows the problem area and you can see I've put a foam pad between the wires and frame to prevent the problem happening.

If it is this problem, then you'll have to repair the damaged wires and pack out the loom with something at this point to prevent it going again.

Thank you Pleiades, I will advise the dealer of your advice. As the bike is still under warrenty and if it is the snag you've described, a new harness and spiwrap would be desired!!

The dealer has indeed found a fretting wire, they wanted to repair it, but as it's under warrenty, I have asked for a new harness... They are also replacing the ECU, this seems to have failed too!

I'm so lucky with bikes.....!!

Well that's a result then - the fact its still under warranty!

A short in any of the FI components can (if you're unlucky) cause the ECU to suffer from power spikes and ultimately failure.

Just make sure that when they re-wire it there is some protection placed in that area because I can guarantee that the new loom will be exactly the same as the old one!

Whereabouts on the bike is this please? Is it under the tank, or under the seat? I want to check and pad mine too.

Pleiades 12-01-15 22:08

Under the tank. You can't fail to miss it when the tank is off.

Haha, well done Pleiades!!

....So I'm getting a new injector, harness and ECU... all under warranty. It's just a shame there isn't an ECU available for at least two weeks... I'll be without my "Ten" for a month!! The dealer has loaned me a Kawasaki road bike, which is something!!!
While she's off the road I'm treating her to new shoes, Anakee 3s, they seem to have good reviews... I'm considering a Touratech Xenon light or I may link the low beam to the high, two Philips X-treme lamps are on order...as the tank is off, now's the time to do any mods I want...any other suggestions?
