520 vs 525 chain

I read somewhere on here about changing the 520 chain to 525 due to more robust nature of the 525. I've got a nearly new 525 chain in the workshop that I can shorten if necessary, and then would need sprockets. Am I imagining it or did I see TDM sprockets fit? The chain on my XTZ needs replacing soon so trying to decide which way to go? Pros & cons? Any advice greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Chris

I fitted a 525 kit from OTR a year ago. Too early to tell whether it's going to last any longer, although I haven't had to adjust it much in the last 6000 miles, other than to take up the initial stretch. Mind you, I did get nearly 25K miles out of the OE chain, quite probably thanks to a Scottoiler being fitted since the bike was new.

I went for the 525 on the basis that I had read a few reports that the sprocket carrier bearings and cush rubbers lasted longer, as well as the chain itself.

+1 but less the Scottoiler - I used Belray Chain Lube :082:

My OTR 525 drive kit (15 / 48 ratio) has only been fitted for a little over 10k kms and I've been entirely happy so far ... I also fitted the sprocket carrier bearing mod and the polyurethane cush rubbers at the same time and overall it's been a great result.

Platty, I'm in the middle of doing the Cush Drive / extra Bearing mod.

Does it matter which of the two Bearings is fitted first?

Anyone care to comment?

I'm hoping to do the drive mod too, but is it still possible to get the polyurethane cush drive rubbers? PM'ed Hunday but no response so far... Can you get them elsewhere?

I'm not going the Poly route initially, I have a new set of Wemoto to try.

Hopefully, with the extra bearing in place these will do the job.

Don't pm him, email and he replies immediately, give or take time differences. Yes they are available still.

Matt.

Harry

I had the mod done by a local company in Sydney so these comments are from a rank amateur :icon_study:

The bearing is a dual race bearing ie a single bearing with a double row of ball bearings ... the bearing is therefore wider than a single race unit and that's why the hub must be machined out to accommodate the additional width.

Hope this helps ...

Thanks, Platty
