Engine Problems in Africa

Hi friends

I am currently traveling in africa whit my 2008 Tenere 42.000km on the clock.

Today I removed the engine, becouse I have a noise inside,
possible some of crankshaft bearings.:icon_cry:

I'm in Ethiopia and here I dont have spares parts for the bike. The quickest option is to send an used engine in airplane

The engine of my Bike its Euro3 but all the engines I've found are euro2 for yamaha Xt660R and X

Anyone know if it would be possible to mount engine Yamaha XT 660 R / X Euro2 in the Tenere Euro 3?

What differences are between the Euro2 and Euro3 engines?

Thanks in advance

Before you go out and get a replacement engine, it is worth checking the crankshaft nut behind the clutch side engine cover. The nut can work itself loose and make all sorts of horrible noises. It is a known issue.

If you get to it early enough and re-torque correctly there is unlikely to be any damage caused and everything will return to normal.

Have a look at these two threads:

Could well be this nut, in which case, an hour in the workshop could save you a fortune and get your bike back on the road quickly.

Hi Pleiades

I tested the nut in this moment and It,s good, tomorrow morning I'll have the engine disassembled and I can check all the engine bearings

Thanks for your help

Ah well. Worth a try.

Hope it's nothing too serious.

BTW, the early X/R engines had no O2 sensor and wasted spark ignition. The engines themselves are all interchangeable, so long as you use your existing loom, O2 sensor and ECU. 2007 on X/R engines are pretty much the same as the Z.

Someone told me that, the rotor assy 5VK-81450-10 is different between euro2 and euro3 engines.

You have any information about this?

Thanks

My rotor assy have this reference Denso Japan 037000-6900

The rotors have slightly different part numbers. Pre 2007 5VK-81450-00 and post 2007 5VK-81450-10. As far as I know, the last pair of digits is used to signify an updated or improved part, or one from a different supplier, rather than a completely different part. In any case, it should not affect the installation of a complete donor engine, the alternator's function, output, crank position sensor and all connectors are identical on all models.

When disassembling the engine, I've seen a lot of soot in the piston, Bad fuel in africa make this, and one bearing of the crankshaft its not good
