How much does a Ten with standard sprockets rev at 100 km/h in fifth gear?

I bought my Ten last year second hand and from day one I felt it was very high geared. At 100 km/h GPS speed the rev counter says around 4000 rev/min in fifth gear. Is that standard ot have the previous owner changed sprockets to less teeth rear and/or more teeth in front?

Compared to other bikes I have owned 4000 revs at 100 km/h seems little.
I have owned a Transalp 600 that reved 4600-4700 at 100 km/h and a Honda Dominator 650 that reved approx the same 4600-4700 at 100 km/h.
Even the Triumph Tiger 955 revved at 4200-4300 at 100 km/h.

How much will changing the front to 14 or the rear to 47 change the rev at for example 100 km/h?

Iv'e just bought a 14tooth front for my X. Based on calculations of around 93%.. easy math suggests that is should rev around the same at 93klm as it does at 100.. ie with a 14 your revs at any speed should be around 7% higher (in theory).

I run 15/48 on my XTR... makes it a little smoother as it gets the revs above the
bad vibration zone around 4000..

Can anyone tell me hove much your engine revs at 100 km/h - and with what gearing that is?

So the next question must be why Yamaha choose to made the XT bikes with this high gearing? As I mentioned in the opening post I have owned bikes with similar power namely a Honda Dominator 650 and a Honda Transalp 600 and both of those reved around 4600-4700 when holding a speed of 100 km/h.
The XT bikes does also have only 5 gears and the usable rev range isnt exactly broad.

A 14 in front or a 48 rear will make the bike rev at approx 4250 at 100 km/h - a very easy calculation tells me...and maybe first gear ridiclousely low? Hmm....confused now....:icon_confused:

1st gear is a bit high for river crossing / real tight trails that require 1st to be used. The lower over all gearing is a benifit..
I think a 50tooth rear would suit me for some of the terrain I ride at times
& the bike would be doing around 4500rpm @ 100kph...
Have not been able to find a 50 tooth rear... So will go with 14/48 which is about the same as 15/51 would be...
Also the Rekluse clutch likes the lower gearing , clutch lock up is quicker..

4500 rpm at the speed of 100 km/h in 5th gear seems much more natural to me on this bike than 4000 rpm does....in theory at least - but I am just an simple amateur then.....

Lots of my road bikes have sat around 4k rpm@ 100kph in top. Nothing wrong with those revs out on the open road but saying that I'm about to gear mine down purely to give it a bit more punch under acceleration.
If I was setting off on a long tar road ride i.e. thousands of k's, I would use standard gearing 15/45 but carry a 14 tooth front as well.

I get 105 km/h on the speedo (real world speed is lower) at 4000rpm with stock 15/45 kit.

Do you have rev meter added to your bikes or how do you measure revs?



I am also using 14/48 gearing.. Good for offroading.
