Rear Wheel Replacement

I've just read a blog piece by Red Bike John [1] where he (rightly) moans about the fiddle that is replacing the Ten's rear wheel with the silly spacers.

Having seethed with frustration replacing the rear wheel on my Ten in the past I have a solution that makes life much, much easier.

I just raise the front end a touch so the swinging arm end is lowered; you then don't have to lift the rear wheel into position - the cause of the spacer knocks. It just needs rolling, with spacers in place, into position. No bother.

It needs a centre stand to work and in the workshop I put a bottle jack under the sump guard and out in the field prop it up with a sturdy stick, bricks or wood (not that I've tried in the middle of nowhere).

:023: Good tip. I tend to use a plank of wood under the rear tyre, which achieves a similar roll out/roll in effect.

Mind you, I've never had any trouble with the spacers falling out. Put plenty of grease on them and they stay put. Cable tie the sprocket to the spokes and the caliper to the swingarm to keep them in check. Makes wheel changing a breeze.

I had to stuff the cush drives with car tyre yesterday morning and turned the air blue
trying to get the rear wheel back in position. I ended up using a plank of wood under
the rear wheel and managed to get wheel back on. It would be much easier if you could
detach the brake caliper while fitting the rear wheel. Considering Yamaha have such
Sh!te cush drive rubbers you would think they would at least have made replacing the
back wheel an easy job.
