So is that surging issue not fixed in new 2014 models yet??? Kinda scares me off the purchase...

My Z is 2014, but with kev's O2 and fuel mods surging is almost non existant, i am using it every day, and in city traffic before the mods it was like a bit of challenge but now its good as any road oriented bike... in 3 months its odo reads 3000km and no road trips more then 300km ever done.. i am basicly trying to say that yes it has some issues but there is solutions for them( easy and not that expensive)
ps: this bike is the most capable all-rounder i ride, but its forte is off roads :)

I don't understand yamaha didn't solve this for all these years. As I understand xt660z doesn't have this issue and it uses same engine so what's the problem??? I don't get it.

I rode a Honda CRF250L a few months ago... it surged not as bad as the XT
but it hasn't got the torque or the engine bracking to make it so noticeable..
but it was there... So it's not just a Yamaha issue...

Well after deliberating these last 18 months I am finally looking to change from the xtr to a xtz tenere, trouble is? I haven't ridden one yet! Tam***h yam have offered me what appears a fair(ish)price of �2500 on mine (2011 with only 3670 miles) giving a price to change of �3499, and the good people there told me the new xtz does not have the fuelling issues and the feedback from customers was positive? Now before I proceed any further, what is the forums thoughts on this? I like honest unbiased reviews, I would appreciate any sound advice. Cheers all, Tony

Hi last year i bought a new XTZ660 first fuel injected bike after a 20 year lay off. After getting used to the height (with 29 inch legs) my main concern was the power hole below 3000rpm exit a corner in a high gear and no go! I bought both kev mods and decided to fit them after the 6000 mile service, upon picking up the bike after its service i noticed the performance was transformed it now pulled top gear from 2500 rpm (on a gentle throttle) and the power hole had disapeared. I have not noticed any surging on my bike but the engine braking is huge when you shut the throttle. I fitted the kev mods and DNA stage 2 which have made a mild improvement at all rev ranges but i would have been happy with the bike as it was after the service, the mechanic has some how improved the fueling unless yamaha have brought out an updated fuel map for the Tenere 2015 and the yamaha mechanic has downloaded it. The bike has a mild vibration patch just under 4000rpm but runs the smoothest at 5000rpm which coincides with an indicated 80 ish mph. I love this bike its now done 8000 miles in 10 months purely on rides out no commuting involved. Get an XTZ you wont regret it.

Thank you for the help and advice through personal experience, problem is? Even on yours you added Kev's mods to make for a better ride and I feel for a brand new zero mileage bike I should not have to pay for additions. So with this on board no matter how raw and how much personality they have, I think I will not jump in without having a thorough test ride. Thank you again. Tony

I've ridden both in stock form and modified and the Z does run more smoothly with no significant surging compared to the R model.

The two Kev mods cost very little and for the effect they have are small beer. My experience is that most bikes need a tweak of some sort here and there to make them right, whether it's engine, brakes, suspension or ergonomics.

I've had my '09 XTZ since November '14 - bought as a replacement for my 600 Transalp after it was written off. I seem to be suffering the same symptoms as others here as in some days it's definitely going onto Donedeal when it just won't run right, and then another day it's great and I definitely will be keeping it! I do think the engine is cr*p - I had an F650 a while back and the Rotax engine in that was so much better, much smoother with less vibes and no need for mods to get it run right. I put the Kev mods, did the airbox and filter mods, decatted the stock exhaust and its better but still protests if you open it up under 2.5k revs and has very small rev 'window' where it feels happy. But I find it really comfortable and the riding position suits me as good as any other bike I've had .... So it's staying for now.

It may be worth waiting for the next generation Tenere as it's likely to have a twin motor rather than the single, with the concerns you have?
I had an MT-07 as a loan bike when my Tenere was being serviced & it had a smooth , eager power delivery. It may need traction control or something in a dual purpose bike though as it would be a bit lively off road. But good for mainly road use.
Dealers would possibly be keen to do good deals on the current single model when the new ones are released maybe late this year to off load old stock.

I am very happy with my Tenere which is used on & off road. I found the Kev Fuel Mod & O2 controller helped the bike a lot, for less than the price of a chain & sprocket set. Australia is one big island & carrying fuel is king so makes the 500km tank range priceless.
