Cush Drive Rubbers

Having recently picked up my 2008 XT660Z Tenere and having read various posts on cush drive rubbers failing, thought I would have a look
at mine today. If I grab the rear sprocket and attempt to move it
clockwise/counter clockwise, there is quite a bit of movement. Does
this mean cush drive rubbers are worn out? I would have guessed that
there should be no movement at all. The Bike has just over 10k miles
on the clock. If they are worn, is it best to replace with an OEM item,
or is there a more robust alternative available?

The Yamaha OEM rubber set is around 32.
Wemoto do a set for 22.50 http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/yamaha/x..._rubber_-_set/
And AJSutton do the OEM version and their own 3rd party version
http://www.yamahamotorcyclespares.co...er%20set?uid=0

They're all the same really. The only difference is price.

Have you tried Kev's cush rubber mod?

Yep, tried both the genuine and pattern parts and I can confirm there is no noticeable difference in how long they last. They are both rubbish!

Buy the cheap ones and do the inner tube mod, or cut some yourself out of PU sheet (which is what I'm going to do very soon).

Fancy cutting two sets?

:D

Geldof 10-01-14 20:41

I've replaced mine with a set from Wemoto. Once they start wearing I'm gonna try the inner tube mod. What I don't understand though, why are the cush drives made from marsh mallow? I've never owned a bike before that needed the cush drive rubbers replacing. Is it that the XT has cush drive rubbers made from a new rubbish material? Or is there some design flaw in the XT hub?

I found an article some time ago on the XT660.com thread.

The chain drive sprocket takes a tremendous load from the power of the engine , which causes the rear wheel bearing to wear excessively , even wearing the Chain Drive Hub Housing ,
The bearing will become loose in the housing at a later stage,

I fitted a double row bearing as apposed th the std single *row bearing.
And with Polyurethane rubbers .I got 56 000km without changing the rubbers again.

You only have to machine the rear hub bearing housing 5mm deeper /
The Bearing I used is still the same dia. as the original.
And machine the inner spacer also 5mm shorter.
It still uses the Standard Yamaha Seal

Can anyone supply me with the address where I can buy the blue poly cush rubbers.
Also has anyone fitted the Hepco and Becker centre stand and then a skid plate that can actually fit with the stand? I'm concerned that the centre stand pivot bracket is also used for most skid plates.

Also whats the groups opinion about D&A's stage 2 filter mods in terms of filtering dust. The D & A may let in a lot of air but does it filter the dust like the OEM or other brands such as Uni filter.
I'm about to ride 10,000 kays across Australia and have done the one and two filter mods and am now concerned that the filters may not be the best to stop that fine bull dust from passing through the filters.

And lubricate them with silicone grease. After 8000km, they are still new.

I did take photo's but they were on my old camrea
which is long gone now..
the 95A I got off E-bay ========> http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-x-2-X-11-3...QAAOSwPRlXmmC3
mine have been in aleast 2 years have noticed
there is slight movement in the sprocket now..
"might be time for the inner tube trick"

i used 95A "red colour"
the next hardest one up is 75D "brown colour" ( maybe a better choice)
Urethane has a colour codeing system... but not eveyone sticks to it..
A & D are the "shore" rating...

thousands of kms on polyurethane cush drives

Yes.
I have had 4 XT660Z Teneres.
My current Tenere is a 2014 model.
It has 93k odo.
I have 40k on the poly rubbers currently.

Three boat builders from Amsterdam.bought 3 sets of rubbers for their 3 Teneres.
They travelled 26 k on the rubbers to Caoe Town.South Afriva, with no problems.
I will ask them to come and post their comments for you.

Nitromoz 13-10-18 02:07

Are good cush drives worth money only done about 500 mile but no play but got to do the bearing mod when I change sprocket next as per the torque load on it with the better cush drives
