purpose of snorkel??

Hi Folks,

Can anybody tell me what's the purpose of the air intake snorkel on my xtx. Is it a restriction for the air flow. Or to create a kind off vortex in the airbox.

What is going to happen when ik remove the snorkel. Does the engine perform better.

It's main purpose is as a silencer - to reduce induction roar and to help the bike pass noise tests.

The engine will perform better, as there is less restriction to flow (hence the additional noise). To make the most of removing the snorkel, adjusting the fuelling to suit the change will help (but not essential).

Thanks for the anwser.

Do you mean to increase the CO number in the diag mode? Or are the other ways to change the fuelling ?

As I said, it isn't essential to do anything if you still have the stock filter in place. Adjusting the CO won't make any real difference as it only alters the fuelling at tiny throttle openings.

A Kev Mod or Power Commander will be needed to change the fuelling at wider throttle openings (together with O2 controller/optimiser if you have a O2 sensor equipped bike).

Ok I understand now.
Thank you for your quick and clear answers. :)

Found this helpfull too. Thanks. :)

Just discovered yesterday that the previous owner had removed it on my bike, thought it was still in.

Sound hates turning corners so the 90 Deg bend in the snorkel heavily attenuates the induction roar with the side effect of a small drop in induction efficiency. There is also a kev recommended mod for drilling out the airbox if you want another gain.

Most of the mods give a small to moderate gains but when you put them all together the difference in the machine is just brilliant.

The real nice thing is that if you sell you can put it back to standard for the new owner if that's your agreement. Even drilling out the airbox, if you use the recommended 28mm holes you can plug them with rubber grommets.
