valve clearance at 12K
 

Hi all, I decided to do the 12k service myself. I have checked the inlet valves which were okay. The exhaust valves I set to .20mm one of them was fine the other valve I adjusted out to .20mm as there seemed to be more drag? hope this makes sense. Anyway, when the bike is idling I can notice a slight ticking noise from the front of the engine. My question is, do I need to go through it again (tank off etc..) and recheck the exhaust valves.

Also, I have just done the oil change I added the oil in stages. I put 2.5ltrs of oil in (in stages)then took it for a spin before adding the other 100ml (2.6 ltrs in total). would the 2.5lts cause the ticking noise? I hav'nt had the chance to take the bike out with the 2.6 ltrs in

I think that I will have to recheck the valves??? but I could really get another opinion. I would have liked to set the exhaust valves to .18 but my drapers are .10, .15, .20 (set of 20 blades) are there blades I can get to measure .18?

Hmmm... I get the same ticking noise but it seems to come from the left side of my tank (radiator fan?)

It's not a permanent 'tick' as such... just every now and again.




As far as I know, when changing oil:

You should add 1.9 litres of oil, start the engine, rev it hard 5 times, switch off then add the last 0.7 litres.

Slight ticking is normal. Did you bleed the oil filter compartment by lossening the small bolt on top?

Hi, Thanks for your replies. I have just bled the oil filter housing so all seems fine there. It could be that I am worrying about nothing. pehaps after doing the work for the first time and putting it back together, I am listenning/looking for problems? I can definatley hear a ticking noise but was it there before I did the valves; I can't be sure...

:) there is always that "oh dear " moment just as you press the starter button having taken it apart! I've convinced myself mine feels more vibby having done a full service on the weekend!

My bike went in for service recently and they gave me a loan bike (An XJ6F Diversion)

After riding that for 3 days, I swear my bike's taller now!


That ticking (I'm sure) is normal... It's been on my bike as long as I can remember.
I think you've got the 'first time fear'. It'll go away next time you do an oil change :D

I think your probably right. Once I get the chance to take it for a decent spin i'll put it to the back of my mind. The oil change was straight forward although it does shoot out of the drain bolt at some rate!!!

My local yamaha dealer quoted �600 for the 12k service. I'm not sure what other people pay but it seemed pretty expensive hence why I thought I would do the service myself over winter.

I know what you mean about getting on the yami after riding another bike. I also have a triumph thunderbird sport. When I get on the TBS it feels like a monkey bike

They didn't do my valve clearances at 12K
They didn't do my swingarm at 12K
They did my spark plug and oil/filter change and charged me �162 for the pleasure.

I took it back a week later with a seized steering bearing and a squeaky swingarm and they did both of those under warranty.. �400 worth of work for free. Thanks.
Do it yourself. Keep receipts. Keep a log of everything you did and stick it in your warranty book.
It will invalidate your warranty, but I'd rather see that these things were done if I ever came to buy your bike.
