metric & imperial sizes

Hi

As you know the Tenere rear is 130/80-17

Im looking at trying an army special on the rear (had a front one, thought it was brilliant).

The army special size is 4.75 - 17. I think the 4.75 part is how wide the rim is (in inches). Will this be ok on the Tenere.

Thanks
Phil

Hi Phil,

4.75 will be slightly wider than a 130, should be okay as I've heard of 140's being used which is roughly 5-5.10
Hope that helps. Have a look at this link http://www.mad-ducati.com/Technical/...TireChart.html

4.75 is narrower than a 130, its roughly equivalent to a 120.

5.00/5.10 is equivalent to a 130.

Here's a pretty good website that explains everything you'll ever need to know about tyre sizing...

140's will do. But a 4.75 is more a 120 (4.75in x 2.54in) than a 130.

A 130 is the same as a 5.10 give or take...
If yer ride on lose surfaces "gravel roads" go down to
a 120 / 4.60... a narrower tyre cuts though
the lose top into the harder base easyer..
A wider tyre just rolls around on the top...
mud/sand go with the wider tyre...

yer choise the tyre tread patten for what yer on
& also how wide the tyre is...

Must have got confused somehow as the link I gave shows different sizes depending on whether the tyres are street or knobby :104:

It's fine. I've used several of them.

If you were closer to Derby I've got a couple of lightly used ones you could have had for cheap.

FWIW, I like the Army front, but I think the Mitas C-02 is a better choice for the rear - still aggressive in the dirt, but more stable on tarmac and lasts longer.

Ive never heard CO2 as stable on the road before! ! :)

I know a lot of people with CO2's and they love them, but all agree that on the road there dodgy. Especially when they wear as there fairly square to start with.

My 120 army rear has just arrived, looks well skinny! Mind you, I'm running a 140 at the mo.

Its interesting when people say that skinny tyres sit on the surface better - old school land rover and such always have skinny tyres.

I run 120/4.60 for my mainly dirt tyres... 130/5.10 dirt/road use..
Rally cars are a prime exsample of narrow tyres on lose surfaces..
The more lose gravel on the roads the narrower the tyres they put on..

I've heard no end of people say, more or less "if you ride on tarmac on C-02s you will die". I've probably done over 10,000 miles on C-02 rears over the last couple of years, plenty of it in the wet. Last time I checked I was still alive.

From this, I hypothesise that "people" are generally dumb and expect a dirt bike on knobblies to behave just like they were on more road-biased rubber.

I dunno about you, but I tend to ride a bit slower in the rain. Equally, I'm not dawdling, I have better things to do than spend too long on the commute. I ride the tarmac sections of rallies on them, legally of course, but under time pressure. At least one rally last year had a mile or so of tarmac in the special test.

Actually, 'stable' was probably a poor choice of words in my last post, the Army Special rear isn't in any way "unstable" or "unpredictable" - it just has absolutely no grip. It lets go in the most beautifully predictable way, and will turn you into the king of drifting out of corners - although you won't be able to wheelie any more. It will also wear out in a couple of thousand miles.

A C-02 has way more grip on-tarmac, and a bit more grip off-tarmac. You should be able to get the best part of 4,000 miles from one.

(IMO. The reality of course is that internet advice on tyres is seldom worth a damn, you've just got to put your money down and try for yourself. I'd suggest trying a C-02 when you kill the Army rear, but you can make your own mind up)
