de cat and fuel mod
Hi is it strictly necessary to fit kevs fuel mod, when de catting the exhaust.
If I do will it drastically afect the mpg, because good mpg was the reason I sold my gsa. Glad I did lovig the xt Cheers Ben:sex: |
I De-Catted mine a year ago and am just getting round to fitting the fuel mod now along with the DNA filter, my plug colour is fine and I gained a little bit more low down flexibility after the De-Cat, not noticed any mpg difference to be honest.
Regards, Jim. |
Firstly welcome to the forum.
The cat will have very little affect on the A/F ratio on these 660's |
Thanks for the welcom, but you have just done yourself out of a sale!
I will buy the fuel mod when I get around to doing the snorkel and filter. Cheers Ben |
de-catting the pipe improved my MPG! i have de-catted mine and drilled the box open, plus a filter and fuel mod and still get 60 mpg. actually its gone up a bit to 66mpg recently. 35 000 miles on the clock :)

Hi I cut the cat out of mine & found a huge differents in performance,
I used to run a single MTC can but found it far to noisy & could not get rid of the Back firing popping, I have stage 1,2&3 with Kev mod & eliminator, bike runs so sweet now, smooth no popping & plenty of grunt, really glad I made a decision to remove the cat as I was finding it hard to gel with the Ten. |

Talk like that will not get you far in this world and especially not in a dedicated forum GIVEN to us by VERY DEDICATED Mods. Careful with your exclamation marks! :runaway: |

It was ment to be a joke, and l have since bought a fuel mod, which I am very happy with.
I would never diss kev, without technical knowhow this site would be a poorer place. Hope this clears up any misunderstanding Cheers ben:rolltfl: |
Redbikejohn. I have read your "manual" on how to decat the Tenere and would like to know How important is it to drill the additional holes?. I am mainly looking for weight savings and a little better sound without being loud.
Thanks |
Hi. Well the decat and drilling isn't going to save much weight but the bike does run substantially better without the cat. Noise wise it is a bit louder than stock - mostly as the stock bike is so dam quite. It it much less noisy than a MTC can but about the same as a twin leo Vince setup (took a quick spin on a mates bike) with baffles in place . It breaths better once drilled so as long as you aren't too worried with the increase in noise I'd drill it. It can be drilled later so maybe decat first and see how you get on.
|
Thanks RBJ. Just to be sure I understand correctly. The holes are drilled from behind and could therefore be done without opening up the can a second time?
|
Yes that's right. There are quite a few pictures in the report and more in my photobucket account if you look for the xt660z album.
|
Very clear and help full, again thanks.
|
RBJ when cutting the can open, I also cut through underliing cloth and screen. Should I try and put that back in or just take it out, and if so will heat be a problem?
Thanks |
Sounds like you cut it slightly differently? I'm sure mine stayed in one piece. Anyway the amounted of heat produced after decat and drilling is a lot less than standard so it should be OK. However I would try and weld all the bit back together as they were. Post a picture?
|
The can is at a freinds house for him to weld (I am not an expert), so no foto at this time. He is however confident that he can tag the screen back in place. So we should be fine.
Thanks for your support. |
Job done, thanks for you help RBJ. Improved sound and performance without any cost. I must also admit that i really like the design of the stock vs aftermarket pipes that seems to be more exposed.
Now it is problaly time for PC or KEV mod. |
glad it worked out. PC is very expensive. kev mod makes a difference but the CO2 controller he makes has a noticablepossitive effect ofthe ride quality.
