Poo! Self maintenance fail!

Title says it all really,

Traveleed up to see Steve D on Sunday to sort out my tyres and learn how to change them myself again as quite simply since doing it last year at the lakes I have forgotton. haha so 30 mins later job done and chris was one happy chappy!

Got to the bike today to plonk the wheel on and it is a flat as a pancake! Poo No# 1! Must have nicked the tube when putting the wheel back on.

Oh well cracked on thinking ill just whip it off again and replace tube when my levers get here.

So next decided to change over the oil filter and oil. Emptied the sump no problems with no mess, popped out the old filter, spilt a little bit of oil that was inside the filter..no biggie.

Started filling the ten back up with oil and put 2L in and spilt it everywhere DOH! So I now think the bike is slightly overfilled....What if anything is this going to do to the bike?

Next up is to order up a new tube, new front pads. What size do I need and where is best to get them from?

Also the horn is being pathetic noise wise and just kind of wheezing. Is this an electrical issue or is the horn dead?

Cheers Chris

Horn
Some times you'll find a little screw/nut on the back for tuning
If not try adjusting the nut on front if it has one

Chris, you haven't overfilled it. You are still about half a litre short of the proper amount. Sort this straight away!

You are supposed to put 1.9l in, then start it and rev it up half a dozen times to send some oil round the engine. Then the remaining 0.6l will fit in the tank.

RTFM!

As above!

Also worth noting that they don't like being filled with oil too quickly, especially if you're using a funnel and hose as the air can't get out quick enough and you end up with a big air pocket rising and pushing the oil out when you get close to passing the 1.5L mark. So don't try and cram all 1.9 litres in in one dollop. I've found adding 500ml in stages, leaving short time between each to let things settle.

You are not alone making a mess - at the 600mile service the dealer managed to get oil everywhere which blew all over my legs when I rode the bike home! (Only time it's been to the dealer)

As for the horn, it is most likely to be the spade connectors need a good clean and roughing up to bare metal again. Spades are notorious for corroding, particularly when they are exposed to spray like on the Tenere. You can check the horn itself by taking it off and connecting it directly across a battery.

Ah I never knew about reving in order to get the oil moving, makes sense really when you think about it. Will run it a wee bit tomoz a recheck levels.

Also the air pocket comment makes sense too thinking about it.

I've ended up getting everything from wemoto its all there and ready for you a
Parts/code wise and doesnt seem to be too bad on price aswell.

Lookig at the horn yesterday it is a wee bit rusty. The sound of it to me does sound like a poor connecton so will double check that tomorrow too.

Cheers folk for the info.

also check there's no dirt or stones in between the gap between the front and back plates if you know what I mean. basically a horn vibrates and dirt over time can get in a stop the plates from vibrating. had the same problem with my xtr and found a stone in there

So, come on then, update us with how you got on with the rear tyre. Did you go and get some gear and do the job yourself or wimp out and get it done at a shop?

Details required....................and don't say you do not know how to get the rear tyre off:smoke:
