insurance is a big con anyway.
in my first year of riding, i had an un-insured car driver knock me off and he was convicted of having no insurance, yet my insurers reckon my premium had to go up.

Just got my reminder yesterday Ebike multibike policy Xjr13sp + XTX = 149 TPFT One of the benefits of being old :woo:

My insurence broker 'devvit' tried dobbing me 3 years ncb for notifying them that a blind tard had bumped into me. I stated I would not be making a claim due to no injuries/damage to my bike. It was purely for notification purposes should the 3rd party numpty try to claim. I had witnesses too who stated I was not a fault etc.

Anyhu renwal comes through at 218 quid, if I mention the 'incident - no claim made' 430 quid, if i get rid of that and put a 'claim - driver not a fault' with total claim cost of 4500 quid on the quote, it comes out at 300 quid??????? How does that work out?????

My insurence company also stated that I would have to mention the incident as my insurence would be invalid otherwise. They told me and I quote......'it will not effect your premium and you will maintain you 6yrs NCB'. So whybthe hell are they asking 200 extra on a quote for a new customer with the incident mentioned????????

Dick Turpin truely is alive. I hasten to add by the way that I have aptly named Devitt, Shuvitt now as that it what they can go do with their policy!!!!!!!

It's a minefield, but in your position I would shop around and actually talk to some of the companies by phone to explain your circumstances. The problem is that you must, under the T&Cs, notify the insco of all accidents, even if they don't result in a claim or are not your fault. If you haven't disclosed something and they check on their database, you may find yourself without cover.

All insurance is based on statistics, and unfortunately if you have had an accident (even a no-fault one) then according to the stats you are more likely to claim in future, so they view you as a higher risk and bump up your premium accordingly.

Aye I understand all that etc, I just dont understand how they can add 200 quid on for an non claim incident and only add 100 quid on for a ln actual none fault claim that got paid out. Seems a little backwards to me.

Protecting you NCD is a bit of a cash cow for insurers. You have to notify them of any incidents, no matter who is at fault. Statistically speaking, you will be involved in a similar incident to the one you notified them against withing 3 years (I say statistically, doesn't mean you will). So your premiums are loaded to cover the probability of loss, next time you might make a claim. So paying your NCD protection is pretty much a waste of time unless your premiums are high to start.

2 1/2 years ago someone shoved a shopping trolley down the side of my motor and sodded off. I put a no-fault claim in, under malicious damage. This has managed to become a 2500 fault claim on the Insurance Database, so despite having protected NCD it still pushes my premium up by 50 a year.

The problem is, insurers will not loose money, so where they pay out more (say for personal injury) everyone else's premium goes up a little to cover it. If there is any slight reason to increase your statistical risk, your premium goes up. Upon renewal, lazy people (the ones who just renew I mean), pay the price and the premium goes up. If an insurer has had allot of claims for a particular bike.rider profile that year, you guessed it, the premium goes up.

There are things you can do to lower it. IAM/ROSPA Advanced passes can reduce your premium as much as 20%. My Tenere Fully Comp cost 79 a year with 4k of accessories listed and covered. The IAM Course cost 130ish quid (don't quote me it might be more), so a young rider could recover their outlay in a year.
My daughter passed her (car)test last year. I encouraged her to take PassPlus and that cut 10% from here insurance. She paid out 50 for the course and saved nearly 100 on the first year insurance.
BikeSafe, in Cumbria it costs 10 (used to be free) but will reduce your insurance (with most insurers) by 10%. Worth a couple of days of anyone's time.

I'd like to see a system of 3rd party risk covered by some national scheme and funded through fuel tax - the more you travel the more you pay, but it would mean that everyone would be insured so no more insurance-less drivers/rider out there. Fore those wanting comprehensive cover the market would be more competitive. I'd like to see RFL funded the same way too. But I doubt that will ever happen.

Agreed. Scrap VED and put an equivalent duty on fuel. Easily collected, hard to escape paying it, and all drivers (including foreign trucks) contribute. Those who use the roads least pay the least, and fuel guzzlers pay proportionally more than the economical. Seems fairer to me. The only drawback is the lack of a check on insurance and MoT at tax renewal time, but that can be got around with display discs like the current tax disc. Many countries use this system. I think my d-in-l who lives in Ireland has five discs on her screen.

Simpler, cheaper, better, and easier to administer. Of course the govt isn't interested. Too many jobs for the boys to think of changing now.
