Alu panniers

Guys as you may know I've just bought a Yamaha Tenere. Now I've got a top box for day trips and the odd bits and bobs but need to get myself a set of panniers for some longer distance touring. I previously had a set of Alpo Aluminmumpanniers for my old xtr and loved the top loading idea and the fact you could use the space rather than the plastic panniers where you need a degree to pack them right!!!

Has any one got Alpo panniers lately? how are they? how did you mount them? how are they holding up?

or any one got similar Aluminmum panniers?

Looking to spend as little as possible (300-350) and doesn't matter if they are thin for a crash just as long as they are water tight

Pleiades 18-11-12 14:22

Have you thought about the Yamaha option? I know they arent truly aluminium, but they are top loading, compact and watertight. I know some people have moaned about the keys/locks, but Ive never had any bother (4 years/25K miles). You should easily be able to get a good second hand set well within your budget (in fact I believe uberthumper has a set for sale at the moment?)

uberthumper 18-11-12 15:42

I have indeed. Let me know if you're interested and I'll see how much they would be to post up to you, then give you a price.

I liked them - they manage to be quite big without being wide, and they're top-loading, so easy to chuck stuff in. I just don't use them enough to justify having the money tied up in them, hence they're up for sale.

sorry uber I'm just not a fan of the Yamaha panniers. cheers for the offer though.

I have fitted the Givi Trekker aluminium panniers to mine http://www.givi.it/Bauletti/Monokey/TRK46N-TREKKER and on a recent long trip round Sardenia they proved excellent!! I have also now bought the internal bags they sell so that when you wanna carry your stuff from the bike to the B and B room, you just carry the bags and leave the panniers locked to the bike. BUT they are not cheap, I paid about 200 Euro per case!!! They can be top opened OR you can open the whole side, as you like, and they can be fitted as side panniers OR as a top box. Quality seems excellent.

How cheap do you want ??

You could always DIY.....

gulg
if I where working at home I would take a stab at the home made panniers

Simon
I did look at those panniers but they are a little expensive for the size I'm looking (40-45ltrs each pannier)

fiddich
one set of those panniers are very much the same as the alpos I use to have. the others are nice with the chamfered bottoms.

hhhhmmmm decisions decisions

SimonRoma 20-11-12 11:58

HIya Maxwell, sure they are expensive BUT as Givi are Italian we maybe pay less for them over here?? Tell me the model you are interested (Trekker or the new Trekker Outback??) and I can let you know how much I can get them for here??

Didnt even know they had a new Trekker outback came out.

Both models i would be interested in and both panniers the largest you can get.

Also delivery would be to Scotland/UK.

For 2 * Trekker 46ltr panniers is around 430

For 2 * Trekker Outback 48ltr pannier is around ???? no prices yet

Thanks SimonRoma

SimonRoma 21-11-12 11:58

Hiya Maxwell, I read a bit more and I think that the Outback ones will not be available before Spring of next year.....so lets stick to the standard Trekker. You need to consider the frames of course but the frames are not expensive, around 100 Euro over here. I can get you two boxes, 46L, Trekker, for 400 Euro which is about 320 UK Pounds. BUT then we need to get them to Scotland and the transport cost would be about 100 Euro as the volumetric weight is quite high. So unfortunately the total cost is then very similar!!!! Sorry mate it seems that I cannot help much, Simon.

SimonRoma 21-11-12 12:03

Well Maxwell I spoke to my local Givi dealer today and his prices to me are as follows:
(Note that they also make a 52L version but it can be fitted only as a topbox, and the Trekker Outback will only be available next spring, dont forget you need the frame and here it costs about 100 Euro)
2 Trekker cases 46L 400 Euro.
BUT the transport would cost me about 100 Euro to get them to you so unfortunately the total cost becomes about the same as your 430 quids. Sorry!!!!! Simon

Sounds like you need to ride to Italy yourself Max.

enduro374 21-11-12 13:32

Have you looked at ARD Cases?

UBS yea seems at those prices I'd need to travel to Italy

simonroma thanks for looking at the prices. does seem that you get them cheaper bu the postage is the killer.

enduro just looking at there website now

Pleiades 24-11-12 22:38

Try G+G also

http://www.aluminium-panniers.co.uk/...0Box%20premium

Saw them at the NEC. Look really good are only 340 euro or 275 a pair. They are hard anodised which IMHO is a real plus point, as all the cheaper cases are either plain aluminium or powder coated. The guys who make them said they're developing a flat bottom lightweight version of the Premium case in 1.5mm (rather than 2mm) metal, which they reckon will be the lightest aluminium box on the market?

SimonRoma 25-11-12 10:30

G and G sounds good and the price is also very interesting. I would think that any dealer is prepared to "haggle" today given the crisis so ask the Givi dealer for a better price???? Good luck!!!

maxwell123455 25-11-12 13:08

I'm leaning more and more to the g n g panniers. still thinking of making my own pannier frames as I like the idea of making my own things for the bike and is always a good conversion starter of "those are home made panniers frames yes??"

i have them. there good for the money and the company is excellent. nice looking panniers too :)

they came with a GIVI rack though, which i dont like. its seems a little weak in places, fits well though.

I would like to change it but doesnt that mean a new rack would have to have the exact same carrier size (the bit rectangle bit) or else the fixing gear on the pannier wont fit? (this is the first set of hard luggage ive owned) :smilies0943:

The hoop on the rack would have to be the same size for a good fit, or you'd probably have to re-drill and move the pucks to suit. Another small point is the Givi rack is 15mm diameter tube, most others are 18 (TT, Holan etc) or even 20mm (OTR). The standard G+G mounting kit is for 15mm racks. You'd either have to get G+G's (or another's) kit for bigger diameter tubes. Or (cheaper) make some 3mm thick spacers to go between the pucks and the case wall to gain the extra space needed for an 18mm rack.

Ouch. Not sure if the water might have been a better option than the deck of a boat..
