new tenere owner in north qld australia

Hi guys. First off, fantastic site.
Helped me make a decision as to what bike to buy after being away from two wheel travelling for way too long.
Bought a brand new straight out the crate black 2011 z Tenere 9 days ago and have not been able to stay off it (even kitted up at past midnight to get back out for another spin at times!) What an awesome machine!
I need to plant my feet a little more so looking at some lowering links and some suspension mods, as well as experimenting (with a few ideas ive found on this site) with ways to reduce some turbulence coming up thru the forks and over/around the windshield. On the lookout for some accessories (engine guards, alum bash plate etc) so anyone that could point a guy in the right direction (read: cheap!) would earn themselves a cold one!
Any Tenere owners up this way, say Townsville and up? Im always up for a ride to new places. And this country is so vast.
Once again guys, a great site with a wealth of information and the passion you guys have for your bikes really shows through. I look forward to being a part of this community.

:006: Hello and welcome Dion

Glad to see you made the correct colour choice! ;)

I'd get used to it a bit more before deciding on lowering links, many of our shorter brethren seem to get on fine with the standard ride height. Same with accessories and bling, it's taken me four years to get mine how I want it and some of the stuff I rushed into early on I've kind of regretted, should have waited - but that's the benefit of hindsight! Enjoy! :D

thanks for the hello and the tip pleiades. your right, another week in the saddle and already im growing more comfortable with the whole height weight and feel for the bike. ive been told i ride like a two-stroke backyard maniac at times so i'll focus on some bike protection for now. thanks mate.

Gday mate, and congrats on an excellent choice. I bought mine new as well, about 5 or 6 weeks ago (also black) and I absolutely love it.

I was also a bit wary of the high seat height (I'm a bit of a short-arse), but I'm quite comfy now. Couple close calls, but haven't dropped it yet. I've just got to think when on uneven ground a bit more.

I was also fully primed to get all bombed up with extras straight off the bat, but now I'm glad I listened to someone here who told me to wait. Have fitted the bash plate & centre stand though, & I'm waiting for the hand guards to come from Yamaha (all free extras due to the Yamaha promotion).

Looking forward to touring extensively once she's all set up. If you find yourself riding down this way (central coast north of Sydney), then give us a yell. There's some mad places to explore on bikes like ours. :ytiller:

Gday ScottyD,
yeh mate some good advice to be had on site. great resource. happy with your deal on the bike? took the topbox as my yamaha freebie (found out afterwards ive got a bit of a wait till it arrives, no drama). the barkbusters i got thrown in would have come in handy, layed it over in some clay and got a bent clutch lever as well as a few scratches over the weekend(lol!..nothing stays new forever!). same goes if you get up this way, get in touch, its an explorers paradise.
any issues with the bike youre looking to iron out?

Hey Gandiva,

yeah, I'm stoked with my deal ($14,000 with a new Shoei Hornet for $350, plus the extras thrown in:038:). I'd be interested in hearing what you reckon of the top box. I almost went for that as well, but now I'm keen on a soft luggage set up (fitted a flat aluminium rack instead). The wait for the handguards is starting to annoy me. I'm starting to get out on the tracks a bit now, and they would really be handy (as you've already found out:076:). As I said, I haven't dropped it yet, but its only a matter of time.

When my touring range extends up your way (and one day it will), then I'll definitely give you a yell. Nothing beats local knowledge. Please make sure you do the same if down here.

No issues with the bike for me so far. I couldn't be happier.

Cheers dude.

Welcome to the Club. With regards to the wind/turbulence coming up through the front, depending on your height and the position you sit on the seat, yes it can come straight up and interfere with the flow over the screen. It was a major issue for me, and after many rides with me putting my hands in that area to cover the wind and test what i can and cant do, the simplest solution for me (and one that had more benefits that just diverting the air flow) was to install a tank bag. The tank bag i use is a GIVI T489 with a tanklock and its soft so even though the handle bars touch at lock as its soft it isn't a concern (but this hardly happens unless your manoeuvring around the garage) and as the bag i have has adjustable plate on the bottom you can get the position right and it blocks the wind, well it still get through but the shape of the tankbag diverts it out the side and in a different direction so it doesn't end up buffeting your head. Much better to ride at speed now! The bag is worth about $100 and the tank ring is a yamaha BF05, about $20. Here is the link to my bag http://www.givi.it/soft-luggages/Tan.../T489-TANKLOCK and another that also works that a friend of mine has http://www.givi.it/soft-luggages/Tan...TPH02-TANKLOCK To be honest any of the GIVI tank bags will work i think, only issue is you might have is you might have to cut the bit of the plastic around the base ring so it clears the key. I didnt but my fiend did, all depends on where you position the bag on the tank lock (i.e more forwards or more toward the rear)

Other than that i sure there are many other solutions but this one is perfect for me as it carries all my stuff, phone, wallet, keys etc

Oh and try your local bike shop and fit the ring and bag and go for a spin and see if it works before you buy. Most shops will let you try it out.
