Odometer Frozen
My Tenere's odometer froze at 124,300 miles (198,880 km's) today but the Speedo, Trip meters and Fuel gauge still work perfectly ok.
Anybody else passed this mileage yet? Seems odd that a dry/broken solder joint (due to excessive vibration!!) should cause such a specific fault and not effect the Trips/Speedo. :017: :eusa_think: Electronic time bomb??? :dontknow: |
Big mileage, I would try disconnecting the battery for a few min to see if that fixes it.
|
Oh yeah, thanks Kev - I'll give that a go and report back tomorrow.
|
Congratulations about your mileage! Can you post your experience about this?
|
Yip...That's a lot of riding!!!..Any problems with the motor etc?
:) . |
No exciting tales of journeys to far off exotic sounding places I'm afraid. Mind you.....there was that time I went to Leeds. :icon_lol:
99.9% of mileage is all down to courier use. The engine was completely trouble free to 60,000 miles until the right hand main bearing wore out. Much to my surprise (and delight) my dealer repaired under warranty! (this is documented elsewhere). I had the same problem at about 90,000 miles but at my own expense as the bike was now out of warranty. I managed to get away with just changing the bearing and not the crankshaft as well like my dealer had done. An anomaly of a loose primary drive nut seemed to occur with a worn r/h main bearing (due to axial play) and when bad vibes returned several miles later I realised that just retightening the nut would remove the slackness in the bearing. Although the engine is very loose and vibey now there is not the significant knocking that comes with a worn main bearing. Probably mostly piston slap as it is still on its original bore. Still on original front discs and clutch - only changed the original clutch cable about a month ago as a precaution for a trip to Leeds as it was fraying a bit. NICE BIKE!! |

:icon_biggrin: Just about!
Well I disconnected the battery last night but the odometer is still frozen. I guess I should wait to hear when someone else reaches that mileage before making accusations of "electronic time bomb"?? |

That's a fairly round mileage, sounds to me (just a theory) that the odometer has reached the limit of it's scope. Try writing to Yamaha UK, see if you get anywhere, the sheer number of miles on the bike might raise some interest with them. Maybe thee is an upper limit to the ability of the odometer. |
Yeah, I was thinking about doing that Darren. Hopefully the guy I was in contact with over the main bearing/corrosion issue might take some interest......
|
Daft idea, probably won't work, but free, quick and easy - have you tried changing the display units to Km and then back to miles?
|
Being digital, surely it would go to 999,999 and then either stop or go back to zero. On a similar topic, many years ago I had a TS250 whose odometer wouldn't go past point 9 unless the bike was going faster than 58mph. That kept the mileage down!

The self test on start up shows the LCD digits 188,888 which should in theory allow for a maximum count of 199,999 mi..........
:eusa_think: ..... D'oh!! :eusa_wall: The odometer is SWITCHABLE!! which I guess means it max's out at 199,999 kms not 199,999 miles. So at 124,300 miles I'm only 700 miles short of maxing out. Hopefully Yamaha UK might shed some light on this. I did try as you suggest Pleiades but just managed to reset trip 1 cos I couldn't remember the correct procedure at the time, I'll try again tomorrow. I wonder if this Ten's days are numbered.......err, as it were :081: |
Ignition off. Hold select and reset down while turning the ignition back on. Then select Km.
By my reckoning 124,300 miles is 200,041 Km? |
I must have not pressed one of the buttons hard enough! :gay:
I think your calculator is broken :tongue11: miles:kms = 5:8 |
Don't think so - 1Km is equal to 0.621 miles.

|
Yes of course it is...just testing......honest!
:door: So used to years of using the 5:8 ratio that I forgot it was an approximation. That's it then...the odometer has maxed out. Will await a reply from Yamaha to see if a reset is possible.... |
You bloody champion, RickM! Getting an odo to max out is a major event, imo.
|
Not when you've gotta start worrying about reliability and increased maintenance costs. ;-( :support:
However, in all those miles I can't recall any mechanical failures - just parts wearing out (including main bearings). Strictly speaking, as I've been running a 47 tooth rear sprocket (4.44444444......% bigger) the odometer has been over reading for sometime so the actual mileage is probably 2-3000 miles less. |
What state is the rest of the bike in ?? paint off the engine ,rusty spokes ? i"ve seen bikes at 10K look rough .Have you a few pics would be interesting to see what bits fall apart first :017:
|
It doesn't look that bad for the mileage. I'll try to take some pics tomorrow.
|
thanks

Without looking at the manual to check
Are you sure that it is an electronic thing that stopped speedo?
I thought the rev counter was a thick film pickup from the high voltage pulse on the high tension lead. BUT The speedo source was gear box driven, ie a gear drives to a little box on the left side that is transfers the drive to a pulse that went to the display. So if the gear is stripped or the convertor isn't working your km' or miles won't change. |
Pics at last!
http://s1084.photobucket.com/albums/...20kms/?src=wap @Wootonboy: The speedo (or trip meters) haven't stopped working. Just the odometer - which has clearly just maxed out. Evidently Yamaha didn't expect the Tenere to last beyond 199,999 kms. |
looks good ,you wouldn"t think it had that mileage
|
TBH, I guess it's had a relatively easy life - despite the mileage.
I'm mean; how else would a single cylinder trail bike still have the original clutch and cylinder bore? :mbounce: :gay: (me on the throttle??) |
Good oil and plenty of changes...that's how?
:) . |

Having said that, I doubt whether mine will go that sort of distance, as it's (comparatively speaking) rattled like a tin can from new. According to Yamaha, they're all like that... But not. |
