head bearings

Going to regrease my head bearings (bikes done about 6K).

Is there some sort of guide on here? done it a few times on my Fazer but was just wondering if theres any tips or tricks to doing the Ten. Tme is an issue so any short cuts welcome. :toothy11:

i've done mine a couple of times, but never bothered to do a write up. if you've done it on another bike before it should be easy enough.

bike on center stand
lift front slightly off ground
apply front brake so it doesn't run away
cover plastic indicator holders and tanl by rag
lossen top yoke and prop the whole lot onto plastic covers
slacken two nut and remove
forkes will drop down enough to grease bottom
pull top bearing out and grease.
put loads of grease into frame cavity so it constantly lubes bottom bearing over time
drop front end down so weight is on bearings
tighten up nut so there it zero play when holding bottom of forks and you pull forks back and forward
tighten second nut.
put top yoke back on and tighten top nut.
job done

Done them on my Fazer a few times so kind of know what im doing. Just thought i would ask in case the Ten has some weird little thing going on :)

Like when i took the swing arm out and found that tensioner thing.....17mm allen key isnt it??? or some other weird size!

well, regreased the head bearings at the weekend. They were BONE DRY....bike has only done 5.5K!!!

as with most other jap bikes they tend not to put much grease in spots like the headrace or swingarm linkages. the tenere compounds the problem by running engine oil into the the frame where the headrach bearings sit - this tends to dry out the bearings even more. its a service item that needs doing a lot more regular then the manual says. best drop the swingarm linkage too and grease up all th beaings in there too before winter sets in - if you commute.

i did the swing arm not long ago, and that was bone dry too!

think manual says once a year, but with riding off road / in bad weather / jet washes e.t.c i think i'll prob do it every 8 months.
