Neutral light temperamental
Anyone had problems with the neutral light not working.
Mine has started to occasionally not light up when you hit neutral at traffic lights etc. When the engine is running. It seems to reset itself when you switch all the electrics off and back on again using the main key. |
Take a look at the contact plate for this, its located just behind gear lever
...large plastic cover with 2 screws this is the neutral switch http://img.tapatalk.com/6eaf6245-3c12-056c.jpg Alex Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk |
Yeah, mine has just started to do that as wll. Bike is fine but just the neutral light, Side stand switch is fine. Clutch switch is fine.
Bike is in for a 12K service at the moment. I will go down and see the mechanic today and see if he has resolved the problem and get back to you later this evening. Cheers SteveD |
Mines only got 1700 miles on it and is still under warranty. Just a bloody nuisance faulty that could be embarrassing at traffic lights.
If you find any more out please let me know many thanks. |
Nuetral light
Just an update on this problem.
Its now very hit and miss, works sometimes , sometimes not at all. But its now stopping me starting the engine-as the neutral switch thinks the bike is in gear it wont let me start the engine without the clutch lever being pulled. Ive spoken to the dealer who supplied me with the bike and they are kindly going to send me up a new switch under warranty and i will replace it myself ( there isnt a yamaha dealer in cumbria now...!) When i get the old switch out i will see if there are any visible reasons for it failing. Stupid little fault but taking time to sort. |

There is also a switch on the clutch lever, as long as the sidestand is up, and the clutch lever pulled right in, you can start the bike in gear. Doesn't sort your problem , but it might get you going again. |
Whilst my bike was in for the service, as mentioned previously it had a similar problem. The mechanic had a look at that big cluster iof connections behind the rear brake slave cylinder. Pull the plastic cover up and check the connections are good. Worked for mine.
Hope this helps. |
Yeah i had a look at that lot but mine looked fine.
I think it is a mechanical fault with the switch rather than an electrical problem with the wiring loom. I cleaned and greased the connections anyway just to be sure. Looking at the workshop manual I think I wil have to drain the oil to replace the switch and it also looks like I will have to remove the side stand to get access to the thing as well. small fault turning into a bigger job - that yamaha should be doing! |

I considered this when my light went wobbly!:Knitting_22PFUP: |
Its a possiblity but ive just filled the tank and if i lean it over against a wall i might not get it back upright!
As some of the oil is in the frame i think i might be able to quickly replace the switch without losing much oil! Or the whole lot will land on the floor! I will let you know. |
Just lean the bike against a wall or bench at an angle similar to the bike being on the side stand - you won't loose much oil (if any?) as the gear shift drum is behind the white "switch" cover.
I say "switch" because it consists of just a pin on the gear shift drum that lines up with a pad on the white cover when in neutral to complete the neutral light circuit. At such low mileage it would be very unusual for these bits to have worn out/be contaminated. Have you checked the condition/connection of the wire from the white cover (screw come loose/wire damaged)? |
I got a new to me Tenere yesterday, not quite got it home yet but that is a long story.
I noticed the neutral light is not working, the light is fine, illuminates when you switch the bike on, but not (well it did once) lighting when the engine is running and you hit neutral. I got used to it pretty quick. Also the bike will not with the side stand down, even if you pull the clutch level. It must be up and the clutch level pulled, is that how it is supposed to be? |

When you say "new" bike, do you mean "new to you", or brand new from a dealer? If it's the latter (even if you got it second hand from a dealer), I'd take it straight back! BTW - Hi and welcome to XT660.com :006: |

Well, when it finally makes the final 30 miles of trip home, I will have to have a look at the neutral switch. Thanks for the welcome.... |
My neutral often flickers when I am sitting at the lights.
Never realy concerned me. |
