New xt660z owner from Poland
 

Hi everyone, I have recently bought brand new XT660Z with ABS and started equiping it with long distance travel accessories. I decided to get newer option with ABS, lower seat and suspension simply because of pure comfort of travelling. The only thing I don't like about it is the battery under the tank. Yesterday I have tried to have a look at the battery but it turned out that after unscrewing many screws the tank can't be lifted because ignition switch obstructs movement on hinge screws. Would I really have to unscrew 2 hinge screws so as to completely remove the tank ? I hope to learn lots from you all. Thanks

Someone will shortly explain to you how to remove the tank, I have never had a Tenere, so I can't give you any pointers.

The battery isn't under the tank.... unless they have changed the design recently. The battery is under the seat and it's a couple of bolts to remove it, but I can't see why you would need to remove it.

Have you got some pictures showing us?

The tank removal, it's a bit of a pain yes, the side panels (grey bits with the indicators) need removing, then the scoops (the grey bits on the side of the bike) need to come off to expose the two long bolts that hold the tank in place.

Under the seat there is a metal bracket that has two bolts, that need to come off, then the tank will lift a small way. You need to get your hands under and disconnect the fuel clip and take the breather pipes off, then you can remove the tank. BEWARE it is heavy and difficult to hold properly when it is full of fuel, it could be 23Kg in weight if it's full.

The workshop manual shows the full and correct procedure for tank removal.

Hi mate and welcome aboard :006: The battery is under the tank on all ABS models as the ABS gubbins is under the seat where the battery would normally be.

Sorry missieeg, can't be of help with accessing the battery under the tank really, as I guess by the sound of it there are some differences between the mountings for the ABS and non-ABS models. If you just want to get at the battery to get a power feed for accessories, then there are charging connections (and main fuse) behind the right hand grey plastic tank cover.

Mystery resolved. I had to unscrew all bolts holding the tank and lift it a few centimeters. Sufficient to reach the battery terminals (I plan to install cigarette lighter socket)

Odd. there isn't room under there on the early bikes.... which begs the question, what else has changed on the ABS model ???

And.. I wonder how much power the ABS draws ? or have Yamaha done something with the stator to provide more juice?

Don't have a Yamaha dealer for 60 miles now, so I guess I'll have to wait until someone put some pictures up.

Indeed there is no need to touch the battery at all to get a power feed for accessories.

Just a note of caution - the VRLA type battery on the ABS bike needs a "special" charger, a normal bike charger like an Optimate will damage it.

(But I'm sure your read the owners handbook! ;) )
