clack when shifting into 3rd gear

At 0:22 of the below video you can hear what I mean

Many people have reported the same, on Tnrs as well as on Rs (we don't have the X here). Is it something to worry about ? My bike is brand new, by the way.

I think mine is the same...if not I'll write back after I'm out on it again...

:)

tacomodo 09-05-12 17:28

Seing the video, that clack brought a sense of familiarity I must say!
Hopefully someone can tell us if it's anything to worry about. Damn you for bringing it up, now I'll be listening for it every time I'm out driving :D

Took mine for a ride today...32c sunny so I thought I'd profit from it...

I paid attention to my gear change to find that it was not as noisy as I had remembered...

This might have something to do with the fact I now run 10w50 fully synthetic oil in the engine??

Hey guys mine was EXACTLY the same from new and I notified the dealer as I thought that we would need a gearbox strip. Mine was a noisy 4th gear. Anyway after about 5000 km the noise went away and Martin told me that often they need to be run in and that so far they have NEVER had to strip a gear box on a 660, neither MT03 nor XTs.

So dont worry you should be ok!!!

I'm just back in from another ride out...I paid special attention this time...yip there's a slight clunk but not that noticeable...my moto has 5000kms on it so I think it'll lessen as you put more klicks on it...maybe an oil change will assist at the same time?

:)

Thanks guys, now I feel better about this. Let's wait a while then. It runs on Motul 5100 , if it doesn't improve I'll try fully synthetic.

Sorry to through a spanner in the works, but my XTZ doesn't do it changing up to third and never has!? The sound reminds me of selecting first on a cold day, with a cold motor. Having said that I wouldn't worry about yours particularly, I'd wait to make a judgement when its fully broken in and, not just the engine, the gearbox and particularly the clutch plates too. In fact, have you checked the clutch adjustment? Dealers don't always get it right when they assemble everything out the crate.

michaelks 11-05-12 00:24

The clutch free play is ok, in fact i just recently oiled the cable, so it's nice and smooth. I'll hang on to the break-in idea, but if it doesn't get better soon i'll just take a look at the disks, maybe they aren't properly assembled. I remember my old XT 600 had a similar problem and it went away after i changed the disks. Anyway, here in our local '66 forum this noise is not a rare thing. Oh and I'm sorry, Tacomodo ;)!

Heard the noise but with-out riding it hard to diagnose...my xt660x has a third gear issue but mine is jumping out of gear under load, gearbox now apart and the 3rd gear pinion meshing with 4th gear pinion is worn but to replace the gears from yamaha australia is about
