Oh dear...could this be the dreaded regulator????

Hi all,

Ive had my bike about 4 weeks now and so far ivehad no problems at all. It is an 08 plate registered in feb 09 so it has seen just over 3 years of road use with now around 18k miles on it.

I have put about 1500 miles on it myself in the last 4/5 weeks in all weathers.

Today on the way to work in the hammering rain, the bike stutterd and lost all power, then kicked back in again and kangerood a little, lost power surged etc.

I reved the nuts off it and it seemed to be ok. Whilst waiting at the traffic lights it burbled nicely , however on winding the accelerator around to take off it lost power then kicked up again.

Before I go fiddeling could this be the regulator dying a death or something else?

The bike has full yamaha service history and may still be in warrenty but im not too sure about that one.

Cheers All

Chris

Something else.

The regulator issue would have left you with a dead bike.

Sounds more like you got some water ingress, either electric, or through the airbox maybe?

Have you removed the snorkel ?

That very same thing happened to my old XTR. Its water ingress in the HT Leads.

A temporary fix is a good spray of WD40 and carry a can around with you.

A permanent fix is better leads and some silicone sealant

Hope this helps Chris.

What do they look like and where do I findthem??? haha

Cheers Guys.

It has stopped raining now and Im at work until 4pm. Bike will have had a chance to dry off too soo hopefully it won't give up the ghost on the way back.

Cool, then it probably is what Keith says.

The HT lead is the one that goes to your Spark Plug. Not the best fitting lead in the world....

Keith is probably right on the money with the HT lead.

It is a common problem on TDM 850s as well. The temporary cure is indeed to give it a generous coat of WD40. You can also wrap the entire lead in electrical tape. Best to wait with that until you're sure it is nice and dry.

see the picture below? the arrow is pointing to the vacume pipe where you need to connect the scott oiler to. the slightly thicker pipe just to the right and below it it the HT lead (not the water pipe i'm holding in my hand!). check it over and maybe swop over the end cap for a new one.
also give bike a general check over.
make sure the thick bunch of cables under the seat isnt rubbing too tight to frame lug (it can ware through).
check all connection and give me a spray with moisture displacing stuff

Spark Plug......
Exact same symptoms on 3 XT motors on here! all have been the plug, they break down under load, try a Iridum one I've had no issues since.
