Finally put on KTM handguards....phew..
 
Hi guys, finally got round to ordering and fitting the hand guards along with some foam rallye style grips and it allows me to retain the OEM weights.. yay :)

First off, I've taken a few pics in case anyone else is looking for pointers/close ups as it did involve a fair bit of jiggery pockery and adjustment to get them to fit and avoid fouling the levers and may help someone else for future. Couldn't believe how much easier it was than I assumed it would be, especially the brake side. The KTMs look they were made for the Tenere as the cut out misses the reservoir perfectly. Clutch mirror mount had to be moved very slightly to the right for that side to fit properly.

Good news is no balls have been cut off(excuse the painful pun) and both levers pull smoothly and safely.

The foam grips were even easier to put on and glue - had nightmares about gluing the throttle tube open :), other than taking off the bar weights (eek were they tightened by the Hulk or what?!!!!) - These make an unbelievable improvement to the vibes(once you get used to the chunkier circumference in your hand)...this is sounding more and more like a Carry On sketch.. :laughing5:

Anyway, I`m glad everything went smoothly and without the usual amounts of swearing and the bike looks fab :)

****** The only thing though is the way I've mounted the guards, I had to move the cross bar brackets towards each other( any other way meant the levers fouled - its that tight) so now the cross bar itself doesn't fit. Any ideas? Its not structural is it for the bar? I assume i can get a section of metal and fashion something that would bolt back onto the existing brackets********

The cross bar on 7/8th handlebars is meant to prevent flex, and stop the bars bending up and inwards in the event of a heavy fall... in practice I'm not sure how much extra strength it adds, but you may as well retain it if possible...

I would cut one end of the existing cross bar down to the correct length, then file the two sides of the end flat as per the original, and drill a hole... dab of black paint and bingo, you're good to go!

I think, if I remember correctly that the cross bar is hollow. Just cut to length and flatten the end in a vice, drill a new hole and fit.
I got a shorter one from a mate where I keep my bike, but on my first Ten I drilled holes in that bar for the GPS bracket and it was definately hollow.
Well done with the KTM handguards, I also use them but on my second Ten I have a set cut down for underneath muffs and a new pair for the summer.

To the cross bar, I assumed it may not be completely structural and didn't feel to make a difference when out riding, but I also assumed it would help a little bit to strengthen across the bar and prevent flex.

I thought it may be a hollow tube, crimped at both ends(feels quite light). Hammerite black do after `bodging` it? If i mess up, can you buy these things aftermarket?!

Another job to look forward to. Just you wait, I`ll soon be posting pics of my home made Rallye bike strewn across my garage in `homage` to you Jmo....Well I can dream can`t I... :)

(BTW Congrats on the news about the Dakar `13 and the news on the sale of your 2 bikes - that Heroes Tenere was my drool bike when i first started riding back in 2009/2010)

On another note, how easy is it to fit a 12v adapter for a 2nd hand car GPS system that I`ve acquired for nowt? Considering my `amazing`(ahem...) technical skills is it something anyone can provide pointers to/pics etc? Do`s & Donts?

Hi there mate. I have put a female socket in one of the small covers behind the indicator panel at the front. This is supplied by a fuse which is located in the pocket that is for the tool pouch (which I have removed, the tools that is!). The fuse is supplied by a relay which is activated by the back light circuit. This means that I have just one extra connector to the positive and negative terminals on the battery. The relay actually supplies three other fuses which are for my heated grips, heated jacket and a small LED circuit that monitorsd the battery power output. Check out Gammatronix.
My GPS is powered by the circuit behind the black cover underneath the dash. If you remove this you will see a green terminal which is not connected to anything. This becomes live when you turn on the ignition, which in turn activates my GPS.

The reason for having the fuses supplied by a relay is so that none of the extra 'appliances' can be left on accidentally.
When I am camping and need to blow up my airbed I can put the switch into sidelight position and this will then activate the circuit for the cigarette lighter socket and hence my small compressor. If the battery runs down the LED will go orange at which point I start the engine.
Sorry no pics as my bike is kept elsewhere, but I'm getting it out tomorrow so I'll get some pics and post here on Sunday evening when I get back.

The small fuse holders from Halfords are cheap and clip together so if one fails I just remove and chuck away. The relay is also from the same place. All of the bits are simple and can be fixed on the road

Damn that set up looks neat - especially they 12v socket and battery light - did you dremell the holes or something? I`ll have to take a closer look at the wiring and routing to see if its easy enough for my limited skills or if I need to look for someone who can help.(basically all I need is a (neat and tidy and permanent 12v socket to attach my cheap GPS that I own currently that switches off when the ignition is turned off -wouldn't think I`d draw that many amps to drain the battery?)

But I`ll def look into doing what you`ve done with the 12v socket and GPS wiring and mounting as that looks ideal.
