wierd problem

Hi guys i wonder if somone might be able to offer some advise,
Right so i havent ridden my bike for a week and when i went to ride it this morning, i found pushing it out the garage really hard, natrually i checked the tyres(front was a little flat but inflated and was fine) so i got on the bike and started to ride to work and found that it was like somone was pulling me back and the bike was really struggling to get up to speed.
also when i let the throttle off the bike really slows down (more than just engine braking), i initialy thought it was either one of the brakes but the wheels spin round fine when i had the bike on its stands.
any ideas?

Possibly check the tension on the chain????

Did you check the brakes when it was cold? Sounds to me you have a binding brake. This heats up the disc and causes it to expand and makes it worse. Most likely the rent from being ridden on salty roads.

Trouble pushing yer bike and it slows down too quickly?

If the tyre pressure is ok and the wheels spin ok then there can only be one reason.........too much christmas pudding! :tongue3:

Is the chain rusty, old? I would say as above either chain tension or binding brake pads.

WhiteYamBen 28-12-11 09:28

yea the chain was rusty, but how do i sort it?

CaptMoto 28-12-11 09:50

If your chain is rusty but still has some life it should be bathed in kerosene, scrubbed with a nylon brush not wire brush. If you manage to get all the rust off nicely just give it a good spray of GT85

See how you get on.

If the chain has over 7000 miles I wouldn't bother, I'd just get a new drive kit, and do away with it. Remember when you change the chain both sprocket must be changed too.

its got bout 10000 miles on it so ill just get a new kit, cheers guys.

Forgot to add a lot of vibes thru the footpegs and seat, would this confirm all this?

Well obviously something is not right, best thing to do is changing the drive kit for a fresh new one first and then see if these problems are eliminated, if not you need to have your brake pads checked and all calipers / pads / pistons stripped cleaned and refitted all of which is really routine maintenance, these things don't fix themselves.

You'd feel a knackered chain for sure and you'd hear it too..

Try coasting at speed and check both brakes independently for performance and check as soon as you stop that both wheels spin freely with warm/hot brakes.

A good soaking with GT85/WD40 should give an immediate improvement if it's the C&S..

RickM 29-12-11 01:29

Bear in mind though that WD40 is a degreaser as well as lubricator. It'll clean up and lube your chain initially but could also wash out the grease behind the o-rings. Still, if your chain is knackered it's not such an issue.

The chain vibes can be annoying but at least you know it's the chain and nothing worse. It's also annoying that the front sprocket doesn't have a separate dampener that can be used with a non-OEM sprocket like Suzuki used on their DR's (OEM XT one with built in dampener is about 50!!)
