PICS-my standard exhaust uncorking
hi guys, Im far from an oxy and in a country where postage frequently goes missing so Im doing a budget mod on a set of standard mufflers...
first up I drilled out the rivets and removed the end caps then chopped out the angled pipe, leaving a 10mm ring to keep the perforated baffle intact... http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...IMGP2260-1.jpg this gave it a better sound but I still felt it was restricted after a few days riding, so I continued chopping... i then removed the next plate (with 2 pipes connected) leaving the pipe that ran through to the next plate... http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...0/IMGP2270.jpg http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...0/IMGP2265.jpg then i removed the last plate and punched a few holes through the cat. the cat was really hard to remove as it was quite thick, so I just left it there. http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...0/IMGP2266.jpg http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...0/IMGP2268.jpg http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...0/IMGP2272.jpg Ive mixed the shots up a little but Im sure you guys can see where Im coming from. The large volume of air swirling around in there is sure to cause some popping and maybe some flames at night but we will see. later ill smash the cat apart to get it out and fit a 2 or 3" thick perforated baffle to it and wrap it in fibreglass, ill slide it down the throat and weld a large washer shaped plate to the baffle then popweld it to the 10mm ring ive left there at end of the can. I hope Ive explained this process right. Ill take more pics as i go and post them. I'll test ride the bike soon to see if its made any improvements. I guess I wont feel anything until i open the airbox up a little and mod the filter... next Ill mod the airbox and later fit a pair of pro-circuit T4 cans to it... I wouldnt recoment this mod to everyone but Im in a country with no emission or noise restrictions... and loud pipes saves lives here! |
yesterday I rode 1hr to the city after the can mods and blocking off the AIS pipe. the bike went well although when it was cold if you hit the throttle hard (from idle) it would stall. it seemed better when it was hot. Im guessing this is because i still have the cats in the cans, despite whacking 3 holes in each cat.
Im happy with the mods and love the sound. just need to totally remove the cats to get her flowing more. any comments appreciated guys! come on dont be shy! |
finally got one of the cats out today. took alot of hacking though, man they are tough!
next I need to smooth out the interior of the can by removing any excess metal. then Ill buy a perforated pipe and run it straight through to some new end caps Ill get made up (possibly the same as a T4 or a staintune design). Ill wrap the perforated core in fibreglass. but for now ill just run the standard ends and the big hollow interiors of the cans... luv this thread :D

Hey hypoboang i want to remove cat from exhaust,is it worth doing it.Any better performance or its just louder?Do you have still stall problems?:icon_scratch:
Thx |
mate my mod made it really loud. the baffle removal would have done most of the damage there. removing the cats wasnt easy but it did get the bike flowing better. I also removed the AIS (most just block it off), and the snorkel from the air box. I did notice a difference in power, it seemed snappier, and didnt stall after the mod.
I did it in asia so there was no problem with emission standards there... dont know about here in oz though... later i fitted a new baffle to the bike that worked sweet, made it quieter, but deeper sounding with the same performance. ill see if I can dig up he pics of that final mod. just running them straight thru like that did make the pipes kinda cackle loudly if thats the right way to put it! cheers! |
hi hypo
if i do what you have done in the first 2 pic's then put the end cap back on would this give a deeper sound, cos thats all i am after, also would it still run ok,my bike is in standard trim, thanks mate |
I know i'm late to the party but I would also like to know this. Cheers

You also mention getting better flow by eliminating the cats. In general, cats are not the most restrictive part of an exhaust system, IF the system was designed well. Yamaha not being slackers, I suspect that the stock system is designed pretty well indeed. SO, removing your cats probably did not help you after all, especially if you left those sharp pieces of metal we see in your photos, causing beaucoup turbulence. You will get more sound by all the mods you have shown, but I seriously doubt that you will get any more power. You may even lose a fair amount of low-end torque. HTH |
Baffle Removal
Hi,
After looking at this thread I am going to do the same. I have just bought two lengths of 50mm X 500mm perforated stainless tube and two bags of baffle packing, 20.00p Bargain..lol. I will do this over Xmas and let you know how it goes. I will also do the rear light mod the same time. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL Croxalla |
Wrong country but where do you find 50mm X 500mm perforated stainless tube?
|
Exhaust tube
Hi,
I bought the tube and packing from a local exhaust manufacturer.I realise that its the wrong country but if it helps here's their address and telephone number. Longlife Swansea Unit14a Cwmddu Industrial Estate, Fforestfach, Swansea SA5 8JF Phone:01792 359326 Cheers Allan I just found a company in Sweden that may help you ...RAY Metallfabrik AB - Lagmanshagavgen 1 - 514 55 LJUNGSARP - SWEDEN |
Wonderful croxalla, many thanks! :icon_sunny:

Uncorking
Hi All.
I just uncorked my exhaust, fitted the perforated tube, baffle packing and shortened the length of the exhausts by 110mm. I have sprayed them satin black with engine paint. The reason that I shortened them was that I modified the back end to fit LED stop and tail lights and I shortened the existing numberplate bracket keeping the standard indicators and legal numberplate. The bike looks a lot better now. I also blocked the AIS pipe at the same time. I started her up and what a great deep throbbing sound on the pipes, I think that my neighbours might want to move now LOL. I might make some decibel killers and keep them under my seat in case I get stopped by the police. The bike feels a bit nippier now and rides a lot smoother. My next job is to wrap the panels with carbon fibre vinyl wrap, but I do not know if it will stay on polypropelene panels anyond done it ??? Ride Safe Croxalla. |
Hey Croxalla... Nice job. We need to see a picture of the finished product!

Popping Back
Hi All,
I did the uncorking as in my earlier thread, the bike is running really well now but I have really bad backfiring when I shut the throttle. I made some DB killers that made the bike sound a bit deeper but still backfiring. I put my CO up from 2 to 26 (with Kev mod). the sparkplug is very light in colour (lean). Is there anything else that I can do without buying a power commander. AIS is blocked. I will post photos of the bike when finished. Cheers, Croxalla |
Disabull that thing that lests air into the exhaust.:115:

Re:Uncorking
Hi All,
I have now made some lollypop baffles and the bike sounds a lot deeper, the popping back is not so bad either. Here are a few photos of the bike with my take on rear end mod with shortened exhausts and LED light. http://i1326.photobucket.com/albums/...ps42b711b4.jpg http://i1326.photobucket.com/albums/...ps83730956.jpg Cheers Croxalla |

Just test supply with a test light to sort which is which.
|
Hi Steve46,
I used a multimeter to find the power supply with the ignition on,this is the tail light. Then I held the brake lever on to find the other live for the brake light. The other wire left is the earth wire. I can not tell you the colours as someone had put different coloured wires in at some time before I owned the bike. I took two wires from the battery and connected them to the LED light to test where I needed to connect the bike wires to. I hope this helps. croxalla:smilies0944: |
Thanks for the help, i'll find a multimeter then. Think i've got one somewhere. Also, i just put some new indicators on today, they're bulb type, and they now flash too quickly when i put either indicators on. Yet, when i put the hazard lights on, they flash at the 'normal' rate. Any ideas as to why this is? :eusa_think:
|
Check the wattage of the new bulbs,if it is lower than what was there they will flash faster.
|
Ok, thanks for the help, i'll have a look this morning. Also going to be trying different combinations of wire connections to try and sort my new LED tail light out. Just hope i don't end up blowing fuses lol. :retard:
|
Croxalla, just checked the wattage of the indicator bulbs and they're the same. Checked the eBay listing though and it does state they may need a new relay. How easy are they to install and how would i go about doing that?
|
Nice variation on a tail tidy!
|
Just a thought; when we get a noisier exhaust, sure the bike goes better cos it can breathe better AND you remove some weight. I for instance fitted Leo Vince and I think that the saving was about 3kg. But my question is, how much of the "improved" performance is in our head cos it sounds better, and how much is real?????? And I agree that louder is safer, same here in Roma, but Leo Vince gives me nice throaty sound without tooooo much noise, so I really rate them. Ciao xxx

croxalla.. i like yer homemade rack... is it sturdy enough as its only welded to one mount ??
